Optima Elite kill @ 250 yards!
« on: December 07, 2009, 02:27:05 PM »
I wanted to post this for all of our friends who claim that CVA's are junk.  I shot a very large doe last week at 250 yards with my optima elite.  I have studied the ballistics for the powerbelts I was shooting and put the crosshairs of my sight about 18 inches above the deers back and pulled.  :) It was the best shot of my hunting career!  This gun is a shooter.  I am now carrying it instead of my shotgun in our shotgun only area.  I am hooked.

Well, i would not do that again, as many things can go wrong on shots like that regardless of how good a shot you are. You may injure and loose your deer.
Great shot. Congratulations.

Why is safety an issue with CVA?  I know I will catch flack for this but my Optima Elite .50 shoots better than my Encore .50

why does every oe and cva muzzleloading thread get hijacked into the bs safety crap?

Bubba,
I was wondering what the safety stuff was all about as well.

It is not about the Optima Elite & some would say it is a form of trolling.

Congrats on the shot, very good esp. considering Powerbelts.

My OE kicks butt as well.

I have had good luck with the powerbelts.  Judging by some of the comments I have gotten here is it safe to assume that many of you struggle with accuracy issues with the powerbelts?

From my experience with powerbelts you lose accuracy if you try to push them too fast. Good shot on that doe, we can't use scopes in minnesota during muzzleloader season, so my shots are limited to 100 yards or a bit more.

You can't beat an inline with a scope especially since I live in a shotgun only area.  Typically in the woods I'll carry a shotgun but if I know I'll be somewhere where I might have the opportunity for a shot over 100 yards I'll bring along the muzzleloader.

I've been using my encore here during rifle season and muzzleloader season instead of my 30/06 the last few years. This year I got this 250 pound black bear with it, this buck down in missouri and another 8 pointer in minnesota last monday (muzzleloader season). Yeah I know it isn't a cva, didn't mean to hijack your thread ;D

Nice shot with that deer. Since you have both the cva and the Encore how about a comparison between the two . Real reports hold more water than advertisments so I would really appreciate your opinions. I've always heard that CVA were junk and have shied  away from them. I figured they can't be that bad or they still wouldn't be in business.

Jack,
I too have heard that CVA's are junk.  In fact right before I bought my first CVA I was told they were junk.  The gun shot fine.  It was ugly as all get out but it shot straight.  I think the fact that some of us Encore owners opt to hunt with the Elite is pretty good advertisement.  The Encore is a tremendous gun.  Now if I was forced to pick between the two just for having a gun with an interchangeable barrel.  I would go with my encore, hands down.

if you want a good looking/handling rifle that can swab barrels, the cva Apex is the deal

Not surprised but still a great shot. I second the motion, I've owned Encore, Contender, G2, and a bunch of NEF/H&R and would take any of them hunting but I really love the trigger and lock up action of my CVA Optima Elite .243. My 45-70 barrel should be here in a few days so I can clear out my gun safe of other stuff to make room for more CVA barrels. ;D

It definately is a great gun.  However, I don't like changing barrels on it. It is a bit of a pain.  It is definately much easier of a process on my encore.

No doubt the Encore swivel pin has more slop to make it easy to slide but I just prefer the action over all of the CVA. Ed Shillen makes great barrels for both for a reason. Thompson has CVA beat in one field for sure and thats the selection of barrels. No matter what I wanted I could find for my Encore, Contender or G2. That 7TCU in a 14" barrel hit a bowling pin at 500 yrds off hand in NM with plenty of ATF guys and a few Ex one shot Marines watching. The trigger guy is no fool, he set the gun down after making that luck shot and said "Yup just like the last shot"  lol
