BACK TO MY ROOTS
« on: October 26, 2003, 07:25:14 AM »
I haven't bought new rifles for many years.  I'm one of those right handed guys that shoot left handed.  Anyway, I had a Pacemaker implanted in August and can never shoot left handed again.  I sold seven very good rifles via the newspaper in two days.  This gave me a perfect excuse to buy new rifles.  I'm sorry to admit it, but I fell for all the hype I've been reading in Rifle related magazines.  I just had to have the "massive" claw extractor so got a CZ & Ruger, then I had to have the accurate Tikka.  That's not the end of it, I also had to have some of the legendary calibers such as 6.5X55 & 257 Roberts.  My wife kept me from buying a 7X57.  The rest of the story:  The CZ is an OK rifle, but to heavy, I didn't like the plastic on the Tikka even though it was somewhat accurate, the little Ruger I loved because of it's feel, looks and features, but it wouldn't shoot worth a hoot (Rifle is currently being evaluated at Ruger).  What to do with deer season starting 11-08?  I saw an add in the paper selling a Remington 270 ADL for $344 at Oshams.  Well folks I'm here to tell you that it is the most accurate I've ever owned, cheap plastic and all.  With the traditional 4831 loads it shot less than two inch groups at 100 yards.  Just out of curiosity I shot some Win. 760 loads that I had made up in 1969.  All three shots of three different groups touched with the perfect, small, cloverleaf.  I'm ready for the hunt now and out of the rifle buying business, I think?

Well, I congratulate you on not just giving up when you couldn't shoot the way you have always shot.  It can't be easy to retrain after many years of shooting off the left shoulder. A lesser person might have just decided to hang it up.  Enjoy your Remington, and good luck this season.
When it comes time to shoot, SHOOT.  Don't talk.

Now that you are shooting from the leveraction side, you should get yourself a marlin94 cowboy in I would say, .357 and have some more fun. I bought one of them, after heart surgery and it has taken several deer in the 5 yrs since. Oh I still hunt with the bolt gun, but it seems like a lot of fun to get back to the peep sight and a williams firesight. I do have a scope and mount for it but at practical .357 ranges for deer I have opted to keep the peep year around.
Take care and have fun. Swany
