western field 30-30 help

I know someone selling a Western Field lever in 30-30,it looks pretty old and I can't find a serial number on it.Does anyone know where it's at.The only numbers I find are under the lever,but it's only five digets,to short to be a serail number right?

Maggot : No that could be it , I have a friend who has a rifle that the serial # is ooo1, and we contacted the co. to varify. :D    JIM

maggot:  I believe that is a Marlin manufactured rifle.  Marlin did that for a number of firms (large hardware store chains and the like) and sold them under the firm name, not it's own.  It is a Marlin by another name.  The serial number is where you have located it. A five digit number is accurate.  If it was a Marlin Model 339 sold under the Marlin name the serial number would probably be longer but I would not doubt the veracity of the 5 digit number.  Hay, if the price is right, get it.  Good luck.  Mikey.
