« on: April 17, 2010, 11:19:59 AM »
I keep seeing an add on tv for the KY elk draw. What are the odds and how good is the hunting?
Have seen sev. shows, looks good, but i know how those can be.

Last year there were 400 tags, 10 of which were bull tags to be drawn for. Over 35,000 applicants. Seems like most bull tags are drawn by hunting show hosts.

I forgot to add, you can purchase an "out of zone" elk tag for $30(resident) and get permission to hunt areas just outside of the 16 county "elk restoration zone". Dunno what the chances are of seeing an elk...

I hear that KYFW is raffling off a bull tag for $25 a chance. I don't know if it is an extra tag or one of the original 10 tags.

I live in louisville and my  neighbor put in for first time last year and got drawn for a cow  hunt. He got one and it field dressed at a little over 440 pounds and he got 240 pounds of meat. My other neighbor put in for first time this year and he got a bull tag! He will hunt in December, Why can't I be so lucky?? I have put in every year. I am glad people I know are getting tags though. I know more people that have paid their $10 and not gotten a tag. There's always next year!!

There were 1000 tags given out last year, 250 were bull tags. This year there are800 tags, part of them are spike tags. I put in every year, never get drawn, but my wife drew a bull tag last year. We hunted on public land, spent several weekends scouting, no guide, and she got a 4x4, huge body on her first day, 150yds, neck shot with a .270 I built her. Most of the tags are drawn fairly, but several people have been drawn more than once, and a lot of Fish an Wildlife officers get drawn, along with their families. A lot of controversy about this, and the folks in the areas where the elk are hate them.
