Now what do I do?
« on: October 29, 2003, 02:59:19 PM »
I filled both my bow tags. It's been eight years since I've got a deer with a bow and this year in a total of five times hunting I kill out.

Oh well, by the time I get this one butchered it will be goose season again. That should fill the time until shotgun season. I guess I can go back to squirrels during the week too. But the state made my rabbit ground permit only so that's out.

I could go buy another set of tags but I don't want to kill all the deer. There's still a young kid on that land who hasn't got a deer yet for shotgun season.

This is like a kid on Christmas. Happy to get the presents but depressed it's all over already.

Tonight's was a doe. 30 yard shot, dropped her after 50 yards. I'm impressed with the mechanicals (switched because my buck ran over 100yds with a very good hit) but I need a few more pounds on the bow, I didn't quite get a complete pass through.

Good Job!  That's the only bugaboo with filling tags early... :D
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff

I think I got my first bow deer two or three years into it. It was about this time of year. I didn't think anything about not getting to go out again that year. (That was before we had the ability to buy over the counter tags, so when you were done then you were really done.)

But that eight year dry spell sure got me used to being able to go out when ever I wanted

Maybe you could spend some time trying to help out the young kid on the property.  Try to help him set up better etc...so he could be successful.  I am sure that he is thinking you are quite the bowhunter after such a successful season.

Awsome Idea long, I remember a kid that no matter what he missed, squirrels, deer, everyting. I took him to the range, and gave him a few pointers...Yesterday he harvested 3 bushy tails. With a big smile on his face he came over and said to me"thank you soo much, this is the coolest thing(hunting)...You could never belive how good it felt to help the kid......So, I think that is a great idea to help the kid.Good luck, and hunt safe :D
Good Luck, Be Safe, and God Bless  :D

The kid only shotgun hunts and the property is so small that we only hunt from a shack in the middle.

He has passed up shots that are as good as they are going to get so maybe he doesn't want to kill. I know both of the kids aren't willing to put the time it takes to deer hunt into it. But part of that is their father's influence. If he doesn't kill on the first day the amount of time he puts into it slacks off majorly. The kids make plans that either keep them up too late to be up early or make them leave before sundown.

About all I can do to help him is call one in, which I do for everyone. But if he won't/can't shoot or make the shot I can't help. I have told everyone that if they are skirting the range of the shack to go sit in my bow blind if they are the only one hunting or make sure anyone hunting from the shack knows they are in there.

Well, you can't give someone desire or dedication.  All you can do is give opportunity and if they dont pick up the ball . . . then you will have to find something else to Hunt :)
