Hammer Ext = Misfire
« on: October 19, 2003, 11:22:06 AM »
I was just wondering if any of you had a similar experience.

I shot my Encore for the first time yesterday.  I have a low mounted scope and added the hammer extension for convenience.  I shot my 7 Rem Mag barrel and had two misfires.  The extension was NOT contacting the scope.  I took the extension off and the rifle shot fine.  Next, I switched to my 209 X 50 barrel and didn't have any problems.

The extension was purchased from a seller on E-Bay.
I can only assume the added weight of the extension messed up the timing or speed of the hammer.

I can still reach the hammer without too much trouble so I won't be using an extension again.  I really need to get some medium rings for my scope to give me a little more clearance, but I'll deal with that after hunting season.

Have had them cause misfires on a Contender, never put one on my Encore.

Make sure the hammer extension is aluminum and not steel. A steel one will also cause the hammer to break off. Order one from Mike Bellm

I may end up trying the aluminum eventually.  For now, it's back to the stock hammer with no extension.  Haven't had any problems since I took that steel extension off.

I beleive the problem with misfires and the steel extension is the added weight. The weight of the steel extension is enough, not only to shear off the hammer, but enough to slow the hammer down enough to cause a light impact on the firing pin causing the misfires. Just my thoughts!

Just an idea........You could always use a drill press and vise and drill lightening holes in it to the point there is just the skeleton. It might get the weight down to less than that of the aluminum one. Then reblue or teflon coat it.
