  • Me and Papa's first double!!!
I have been using my Remington 870 Express Magnum 20 ga for turkeys for about 10 years now. I went in the local hardware today to do some browsing on my way home and found a H&R Topper Deluxe 20 gauge with the vent rib barrel. It was only $199. I think I may go back and get this one for my new turkey gun. I am going to check on prices elsewhere, but I think with a truglo xxx full choke tube and fiber optic sites this may become my new turkey gun.

Now do any of you guys have one of these in 20 ga that you use for turkeys and doves and such? What shot do you use and how does it perform?

Good looking gun Tim.

I am really thinking about this. I have the Truglo choke I mentioned earlier in my 870 20 ga also and it is a 45 yard gun with #5 Nitros. Is $200 about normal for these or is this a good deal?

What chokes will fit the H&R's? Winchester and Mossberg?

Yup, Win, Browning(non-invector) and Mossberg, I get my Trulocks from MPC, that's the best price I found, free shipping too.

A T/C choke will also fit an H&R (they also use the winchoke threads). I hunt turkeys with my H&R Pardner 20 gauge with screw in choke. I haven't gotten close enough to a turkey yet with it to see how well it does but hopefully this spring that will change.

are you talking about nitro ammo company or the remington nitros? if your talking about the nitro ammo company then i would reccomend you take a look at the truglo ssx 20 gauge or the swarm 20 gauge choke, these two chokes have far outperformed other 20 gauge chokes for me using different brands of HTL shot (heavier than lead)

Also hevi-shot is coming out with a new 20 gauge hevi 13 shell 3" 1 1/4oz #7 in the very near future, i'd give that shell a try before you try another shell and you should be surprised with the results

Daman,

I do have a 20 ga. TDC and use it for squirrels, doves and hopefully this falls hunting season on waterfowl. It will be about 10 years before I will be able to hunt turkey again with the wife. Delaware has Turkeys, but I'm not going to take the mandated class to get the permit. I have shot acouple patterns thru my 20 ga. Shorty with the Tru-Lock chokes and have include the range report. My patterns are not as good or have the range that Quick's Heavi-shot loads have. The max. range I conclued for my Shorty with #6 was 30 yards.

Quick,

Your right, about the federal 7's. I've just had more success with the Hevi 13 in the past. Plus the federal 7's are 15g per cubic centimeter and the hevi 13 is 13g per cubic centimeter, so you getting more pellets per ounce with the hevi-13, around 280 pellets in the federal 1 1/2 oz load and around 317 pellets in a 1 1/4 oz hevi 13 load.

also i have found the federal flitecontrol wad to be a little more finicky concerning choke tube selection then the hevi 13 wad, this is all just my personal experience, as you know every gun shoots different.

thanks Zack

Flitecontrols are reported to have issues with ported barrels/tubes, but they work awesome in my gun just using a full choke, I shot one load thru my modified Pardner at 30yds, it wasn't too bad at all, would work in a pinch.  ;)

Thanks guys.

Yes I meant Remington Nitro's. I will take consideration on the choke tubes mentioned. I have always shot the tightest tubes available on the market and found the shells that matched well with that choke. I will have to take a look at the Heavy shot (never used it before).

yeah def try out some hevi shot, once you do you'll never go back to lead. i'm able to put 110 pellets in a 10" circle at 40yds with my 20 gauge and 190 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards with my 12 gauge using hevi 13. the pellets are more denser than lead so a #6 hevi shot pellet hits like a #4 lead. you you get the pellet count of 6's with the knockdown power of 4's
