possibly dumb glenfield mod. 30 function question
« on: January 20, 2010, 03:34:14 AM »
I have a mod. 30 [my first lever gun]that I greatly enjoy shooting, but it may have a problem. If I tilt the gun a bit to the left,so as to watch the action eject and feed, the new round rolls out of position and jams against the back of the barrel as the lever is moved forward. Backing the lever up to release the pressure starts a new round up from the mag tube, and things deteriorate from there. If the gun is kept straight,[as in normal firing position] all is well. I've been told the carrier or carrier spring is bad, and I've been told to just quit tilting the gun[my current fix]. Thing is, I love the rifle, and if it needs some minor work, I suppose I'd get it done. Is this normal?

Don't know if this will help or not but I experienced the same kind of  jamming if the action was tilted to the left when it was cycled.   If the gun was upright it cycled fine.     I found out that the loading gate screw was not tight allowing the gate to open into the action slightly when it was tilted left.    I tightened the gate screw and it has worked fine since.   Let us know what you find out.

I don't see anything I'd call a loading gate screw looking from the outside of the reciever; but there doesn't seem to be any looseness. Gate is held firmly against the inside of the reciever, takes a few pounds of pressure to open it.

Doesn't sound quite the same as mine then.    The loading gate itself is spring tempered metal.  The screw that holds the loading gate goes to the outside of the right side of the receiver.    Check the schematic from the link below:

Sorry I couldn't help.  Good luck with it.

Fact is, I didn't think the gate screw would be that far from the gate itself- will look at that in the A.M.- You could be onto something!. Either way, "thanks"
