I owned a 22" 1895 45-70 and sold it because I wasn't getting the accuracy out of it that I was hoping for based on what other people were talking about with theirs.  I also owned a 1895G 45-70 guide gun and sold it because I wasn't getting the accuracy out of it that I was hoping for based on what other people were talking about with theirs.

I could have lived with 1 1/2" groups with handloads at 100 yards, but never even got close with either gun.  Both guns were scoped and neither got where I wanted to be accuracy wise.  I love the idea of the 45/70, and still have a bunch of handloads.  If the 45/70 became legal to hunt with in my state I'd probably buy a BC as a last hope for owning an accurate 45/70.

Re: "...but to expensive for..."

For another couple hundred bucks there are after market upgrades to popular Marlin 95.
DRC custom, Wild West Gunworks, etc..  stocks, loop levers, triggers, springs, ejectors.

peternap, does it say Micro Groove on the barrel? Marlin has been stamping their barrels with or without Micro Groove for 50+ years. I dislike MG barrels as adding no value and sometimes detracting value. They do shoot factory CoreLokts well as a rule though.

I have had and shot them both and they are both great guns. I now shoot a Ruger #3 in 45/70 and fingure I now have the best of both worlds.

Micro-Groove barrels shoot lead bullets just fine too.0

but my Marlin  guide guns rifling just isn't worth wasting the time!

If you got a digital camera or could borrow someone's; take a picture of it and post it. Hey, some collector may be willing to cough up the big bucks for it and you can get a new rifle + some other goodies too.  ;D

Back to the OP's original question, the Marlin 1895 is the rifle that you want to take hunting.

Seriously it must be an early factory preproduction prototype that got away from them because all Gudie Guns have Ballard rifling.  I'd really like to see some pictures myself.
