I am "New" to the Sport of Shooting. I have been Hunting for 35 years but never just went and Shot for Fun.
I have shot Guns from a .22 to a .300 Mag and a few Handguns and Shotguns.
I would like to know what caliber is Less expensive and more friendly and enjoyable for a man and his 12 yr old Son to Shoot?
The 22-250 or .223,or .204        I also want to be able to hunt Critters with it if I can.
P.S. I do not reload. Don't know how.       Thanks. Paul

.223 is the third cheapest centerfire to shoot IMHO. 9mm, 7.62x39, .223, M2 (30-06), 30-30, and surplus 7.62x51 in that order. None are worth reloading to save money unless you shoot at least 1k rounds. Of course that means finding the cheap ammo which means mail order and maybe more.....

Have owned numerous 22-250s, and 223s. The 204 I know nothing about, but suspect the brass is not that easy to acquire, and ammo probably ain't cheap when you find it.
The 223 is my favorite of all three, and is extremely accurate in itself. Just ask the boys a Camp Perry rifle matches. The 223 is plentiful, cheap, and easy to learn to shoot well with no recoil. It's a good varmint round out a little past 300 yards, and I use it for hogs and deer when I get the chance and my 3030 is along.

Both buying and reloading the 223 is hands down the cheepest. No ifs ands or buts.

The .223 would be cheaper w/ all the military surplus brass around, FMJ bullets (surplus or pulled), lots of different powders work in it.

The .223 is the cheapest and has the greatest availablity of ammo. As for not reloading that can easily be fixed.  ;) What the .22-250 will do at 310 yrds. the .204 will do at 300 yrds., and the .223 at 285 yrds. The .223 is the round I most often recomand for a first time center fire rifle shooter.

I have a good old .222 that I load for, and a .204 that I am starting to really like.  Both Contender barrels.  And I also have a .223 Handy that rides in the tractor most of the year with number 1 son as he farms.  It works well for him on pests on the farm.  He doesn't load, so it is great for him.

Don't have a .204 but have both .223 and 22-250's.  I really think it depends on what you want.  The .223 is cheap and cheaper to reload than the 22-250.  Factory .223 is still relatively cheap to buy but I usually reserve the cheap factory stuff to running through a semi-auto.  22-250 can be loaded down to .223 velocities for target shooting/plinking and loaded up for the really long range stuff.  I get outstanding accuracy out of both and wouldn't give up either.  Just get one of each, a heavy long barrel in 22-250 and a short light barrel in .223.....
