Marlin bases use Weaver style rings, my favorite and one of the best is the Burris Signature Zee, mediums are what I have on both my 917s.  ;)

i second Tim's statement.  my guns wear Weaver rails and most have Burris Zee rings. i have short, medium and tall rings. the Zee rings are a bit narrower then some others witch allows you to use three rings for more secure and solid scope mounting ( which i find that i like )

Signature Zee rings differ from standard Zee rings since they don't need to be lapped for proper scope mounting, they also have a wider contact surface with the scope, they won't cause ring marks or damage a scope due to ring/base misalignment. With a set of offset inserts you can also correct for misaligned bases which has been a big problem with Marlin bases in the past, hopefully they've corrected the problem by now. ;)

The Marlin receivers are also grooved. I went through the same hassle that you are going through with the cheap -@$$ed screw-in mounts that Marlin supplies.* And I went with the same suggestions everyone else here has mentioned......and none of them worked! Best bet is to go with the BKL Technologies Model 261 mount; this mount is designed to clamp into the receiver's grooves of Marlin bolt action rimfires . You'll pay a few bucks, but it'll be worth it!

Go right here: http://www.bkltech.com/category_s/2.htm

////note...those with a primitive server may have to do a "cut & paste" on this////

* - The Marlin 17VL I purchased in July of 2003 had the screw-in scope bases provided. However, the Marlin 982VS-CR I purchased in May of this year.....did not. (???) I have the afore-mentioned BKL 261 on both my 17VL and 982VS-CR and have nothing but high praise for them!

If you go with this mount, I'm quite sure you won't be disappointed!

Hope this helps.

Red ^-^

wind drift:

The BKL model 261 comes in just one height. The scopes I have mounted on both my Marlins are variable powers; one a 4-12 with a 42mm objective, the other a 4-16 with a 40mm objective. This mount provides good clearance for the objective, yet gives you adequate cheek contact with the rifle's stock.

Sorry about not responding sooner, but I don't get over here as often as I should! ;D

Warne, they are the most rugged, well made I have seen.  Check them out.

I'll second the Warnes. I'm using quick release style so as to access the irons if needed, it aint perfect. The base almost looks like buckhorns with the rear blade sorta nestled into it.

After using the Warnes for a while all the other rings out there seem pretty light duty. Like comparing a Toyota Tundra to a Ford F350, both fine trucks, just one is obviously meant for rougher service.

Here's another vote of confidence for Burris Signature Zees.  ;)

Tim

http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek042.html

For optics, Richard runs an 8-32x56 Nightforce Benchrest scope in Burris Signature Zee Rings. Why would Richard trust a $1250 scope to a relatively inexpensive set of rings? Richard explained: "The Burris Signature is the best ring design ever, in my opinion. I'll never buy another kind of ring. I've never seen 'ring rash' from the Burris Signature rings. A lot of people make money off gimmicks. The Burris Signature rings do the job better than other rings that cost two or three times as much. The Burris nylon inserts align to the scope, so they don't transfer any stress from the mounting system to your action. If conventional rings are not lapped perfectly, when you tighten them up you'll be bending something, and this will transfer stress to your action. Not having to lap the Burris rings is a huge advantage. Additionally, with the +/- inserts you can load 20 MOA or more of elevation into the rings. That way, with a lot of cartridges, you don't really need to spend extra money on an angled scope base."

My first choice for the weaver base is LEUPOLD PRW rings. Followed by WARNE and BURRIS zee rings. For the strongest mount stick with STEEL bases and rings. Generally not necessary on a rimfire.

Another vote for Burris Zee rings. If using the Signature Zee rings you can buy a set of offset inserts to overcome an alignment problem. I used them on my 7600 and got the scope within 1" of center zero without touching the turrets. Warne rings are heavy. Really good to hold in your hand to whup someone.

Now I have to say I would love to have a Toyota, and if they start making them in ADULT sizes, I probably will get me one... for each foot.

Steel rings. I have Leupold and Burris. Both hold zero for me well. The aluminum ones never have stayed zeroed for me and I'm not rough on my rifles.
