cleaning/polishing brass

I have just picked up a bowl vibrator and walnut media for cleaning my brass how shiney should I expect it to make the brass ? I threw about 35 300 win mag brass in with media about 2/3 full brass was pretty dirty mostly tarnish though. Will it come to a new brass bright shine? thanks Kurt

If the media isn't treated, add some Flitz media additive and it will help polish it, follow the directions on the Flitz bottle.

I know this thread is old, but I was wondering if rice can be used to clean brass in a vibrating cleaner?
Are there any substitute cleaning additives; stuff I might have around the shop?

Most any metal polish will work , provided that it has NO Ammonia in it , that stuff does not work well with brass .    We had some brass contact points in one of the big motor starters at the ammonia plant that I work in , just the fumes toasted them in about 2 weeks .

Never tried rice for cleaning brass .

Strikenmike, quickdtoo is right on as far as the Flitz. But, if you don't have that, don't despair. It's not as quick, but, it does help. I didn't have any media additive a while back, when I had a thought.(and that sometimes gets me in trouble!) If you have any of the citrus based cleaners around, they help. I used some Rubbermaid grill cleaner,no amonia, and put maybe, 2 tablespoons in my tumbler, and it seemed to clean the brass better. Make sure, no matter what you use, normally you only need to add a couple tablespoons full, and make sure you don't have any brass in the tumbler when you do it. Otherwise, it clumps up like kitty litter, in the cases, and you spend time with a pick, digging out each brass. Add it, let the tumbler run for 10-15 minutes before adding the brass. gypsyman

Well, I went to the pet shop and got a bag of walnuts and a bag of corn cobs.  Stopped at the tractor supply store and got a bottle of whatever the car polish you guys recommended.  Went with the corn cobs and a cap full each of car wax and alcohol.  Stirred it all up, let it run for about one hour without and brass to stir the brew, then polished the brass for about 1.3 hours (only about 15 cases).  Look marvelous.

Only problem....getting that ***** media out from the inside of the brass.  Once that was done hit'm with some compressed air and loaded them.  They look and work great.  Thanks for your help.
