Where have all my turkeys gone?
« on: April 07, 2010, 05:30:33 AM »
Just to set things straight I am not a turkey hunter or have any urge to turkey hunt (well practically no urge) but have no problems with those who do choose to hunt them.  Now deer is another matter as I live for deer season, anyway back to the subject.  This has been a hard winter for acorn eating critters living in the Missouri Ozarks as in our area for some reason we had nearly a complete mast failure.  I guess because of this I have had a small flock of from seven to nine tom turkeys cleaning up the corn under my bird feeders most of the winter.  They were regular as clock work coming soon after dawn and again about noon.  This resulted in me spilling a little more corn on the ground each day just for them.  Then about a week or so ago they completely disappeared. (Much to the delight of the squirrels and the blue jays I'm sure)  At first I found this rather strange until the day before yesterday, down the road a couple of miles where I see large flocks of turkeys in a picked over corn field each day, I noticed some toms in full strut.  Being as 'my flock' has no hens in it I guess the boys have gone somewhere 'looking for love'. :D  Hopefully when the blood again circulates to their heads they will be back in my woods. :D

The groups are starting to bust up and establish their own territory.  Usually a tom or two will hang around the ground previously occupied by the fall group, but not always.
