Fitting a barrel
« on: January 23, 2010, 08:44:32 AM »
Tried to use the "Will a second hand barrel fit?" link on the FAQs and nothing happened.  Anybody know what's up with that?

It's in there twice, one under the Barrel fitting header and another in the More Handi info, both work fine.  ???

Hey Quick

Have you ever heard of a "snap on" forend for a handi?  Is it in any way different?  If so can a barrel meant to use one be converted to fit a modern SB2 frame??

I have a snap on on one of mine. You can still get the snapon forends if yours is missing. The barrel still mounts the same and fitting is still the same. Only difference is what attaches the forend to the barrel.

Snap-on forends were on some H&R Inc firearms, 1987 and later modern forends are all screw on.

Why did H&R / NEF move away from the snap-on forearm? Personally I like the ones on savage single shots fine.

I can tell you one reason why they did away with it, my old swing lever 12ga will part company with the forend when shooting up on birds, has done it more than once on me, shooting level with 2¾" Mag loads it will do the same.  :o

Yikes!  I have a bid in on a "new" model 158 30-30 barrel and a lead on an inexpensive snap on forend.  I am hoping I can load up some hotter loads than I would for my Marlin.  Is this forend arrangement going to be so shaky that this is likely to be unsafe - poor lock up on the roll pin, etc.??? ???

I think Tim's latch may be just plum wore out  ;D  Screw-on is cheaper and allows easy sling mount on the forend (not recommended with heavy recoil).
