Ruger Bearcat woods gun.
« on: December 14, 2009, 03:29:30 AM »
I picked up a stainless Ruger Bearcat for walks in the woods while keeping an eye out for rabbits.  Both cottontails and snowshoe hares.  This is small and light and I can just slip it into my pocket, although I would like to find an inexpensive holster for it.

I sighted it in this weekend.  The winchester dynapoints and the cci velocitors hit about 3 inches high and about 2 inches to the right at 25 yards.  At 50 yards they both hit about a foot high and 8 inches to the right.  Not great, but I can live with that.

However I also tryed cci CB longs that I happened to have and it hit dead on at 50 yards, and about an inch high at 25.  Perfect for rabbits!  It was also pretty quiet with them, it sounded like a cap gun.  I wouldnt shoot rabbits more than 25 yards so I think I am going to stick with the cb longs.

Has anyone else tried these on rabbits?

I must admit though, it can be embarassing shooting this little gun at the gun club with the cb longs.  You find yourself waiting till no one is looking to pull it out and shoot it.  To avoid the other guys making jokes about how perfect it would be for their daughters.  :)

Sent you a PM for a deal on a nice holster.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Don't forget that the S&W Model 1 was a small B/P .22 short revolver and during the Civil War was what many "Men" carried one as a back-up or as in the case of Gentlemen and Officers, it was their only pistol.
Today at clubs guys get into pissing contests to see who has the loudest/biggest, hardest kicking revolver because of a lack of testestrone or somthing?
I think the Bearcat is a great little woods revolver and ideal for short rasnge small game hunting.
I would advise against the CB cap in a revolver for hunting though. The round just dosen't kill reliablly and you should stick with a L/R for sportsmanlike hunting preformance from your Bearcat
I'd like to have a Bearcat! Sure a lot of girls would too, but I'm sure many other "Men" will agree on wanting one also!

I don't need one yet but It is on the list.  I currently have 2, .22s and a S&W in .22mag. but I could need one in the future, I guess I am just easy.

I have 3 Bearcats and I love them all.  I have the 3625th Bearcat ever produced.  It was made in the the 1st year of production which was 1958.  I also have a 2008 50th anniversary model which I bought to compliment the 1958.  I also have a blued bearcat that I got in 2007 which I carry in the woods.  I have shot squirrels with it many times.  I carry in a nice holster from Ruger.

Here is a link to the holster:

I like my bearcat.  Sometimes you just need to have fun at the range, and thats what this pistol is, for me anyways, no loads to work up, no accuracy testing, measurements, or chrono work,  just a brick of 22lr and a steel spinner and some time to kill, carries nice in the woods also for plinking, squirels and rabbits.

The bearcats are nice little guns and I used to carry a blued one some until My eye got so bad I could no longer see the sights.  ::) The sights sure are fine for old eyes.

If they'd make an adjustable sight version I wouldn't be able to get one fast enough.

Would be an awsome woods tramping / kit gun.
