« on: November 23, 2009, 04:50:15 PM »
Anybody heard of a 375 H&H necked down to .358 with no other changes?

No, but it would be a silly wildcat.  The sloping case of the H&H makes headspacing off the shoulder tough, and using the belt can result in short case life.  A better 'cat would be the .358 STA (Shooting Times Alaskan) based on the full H&H-length case of the 8mm Remington Magnum.  More capacity, a 'modern' design, and better control of headspace.  Plus some loading data.

But if it is something you want to do - go for it.  "Silly" should not be a deterrent to wildcatters!

I think you might look into the 375 Ruger for that purpose.

The closest one I know of is the 358 STA (shooting times alasken) its based off the 8mm rem mag case. a blown out H H.
I have shot it and its a power house for sure!

.35 G&H.
L.C. is right with the .35 G&H/Griffen and Howe. Has been around for many years. Yes, go with the 358 Shooting Times Alaskan if your looking for this type of cartridge. 1st, you'll need dies and while I'm not sure, I really don't think you'll find them on anything other than a custom made proposition, $$. While the 358 STA isn't in everybodies inventory it is easier to locate at a less costly $$. 2nd, loading data is more readily available for the 358 STA, although it wouldn't be difficult to adapt to a G&H, it IS there. There is also data for reduced loads down to 35 REM velocities, and everything in between, if one would want to go that route. You can use 375 H&H brass to form 358 STA cases if you have them already. I have done both, and have even used 300 Weathery brass, let's just say "any" full length belted brass can be used.
I have had experience with 2 STA's, now sadly, I have only one. It is a very versatile cartridge, Loaded down to 35 Whelen velocities, it takes deer size game cleanly, as it should. Loaded to it's potential it will put moose down with authority, and that would mean one shot kills. CRASH87

Yeah. You're right. It's a .350 Griffin  & Howe.  I saw a picture of it in Cartridges of the World.  Looks like  a cross between a .375 H&H and a .300 H&H.  Looks like it would feed and extract very smoothly.  A cool looking round, even if a little out dated by modern ballistic standards.  Saw a listing for a custom made .350 G&H on the web, built on a M-70 action.  They said it "...would make a great addition to anyone's .35 caliber collection."   Says a 250 grain bullet at 2,700 fps.  Not earth shaking, but nothing to sneeze at either. More powerful than the Whelen. Less recoil than the .375.

Must be nice to have enough that you can just have a ".35 caliber collection."

lgm270, Over the years I've picked up a few firearms that interested me and I felt I had a "need" for. Without really relizing it, I've also gotten somewhat of a 35 collection, without actually doing it on purpose. But I've always felt they did what they were suppose to do, without exception, and to hell with what the experts say about the 35 never becoming the darling of the american hunters.
      A 1894C/357mag, 336SC/35Rem, 1895 Win/35Whelen (had that one built for me), Rem 673 guide gun/
350 Rem mag, and a BRNO 602/358STA. I always wanted to play with a 358 Win, but when Rem. came out with the guide gun in 350, it pretty much took it's place. But, I do have a tang safety ruger in 243, that would make a good 358Win.
I'd like to add that the 358 Norma, and the wildcat, 35-338Win mag would be a ballistic equivalent of the 35 G&H, 250 gr. bullet at 27-2800fps. CRASH87

What a great post Crash.  I really enjoyed your response and I would love to hear more about your adventures with the 35. Cal.
