SHOT Show update on H&R/NEF
« on: January 25, 2010, 05:34:13 AM »
Just got back from the annual show and there were some new items.  Thumbhole synthetic stock looked pretty good, and I would not be surprised to see off-the -shelf accessory barrels in the future.  H&R seems to be nervous about Rossi offering a new single shot with a large barrel selection.  I put in my request that they make a 30-30 heavy barrel, 30 inch barrel BC.

Wonder if the off the shelf barrels would only work on new receivers released at the same time?  If the receivers aren't the problem, it sure seems like with modern machining they could get the underlug tolerances down and be able to do this.

The only way they could offer OTC barrels would be to make a new frame with tight tolerances, frame tolerance of current frames isn't tight enough to allow new barrels to fit properly.

Maybe a slight design change like in the Contender/Encore line up. But then I assume Contender barrels won't fit Encore frames. I really don't know that for sure.

Guys I hate to burst the bubble, but if they start doing that we are going to be paying a $100 more per gun and per barrel. I would love to see it and would be the second in line to get one (one of you guys would beat me!).

Exactly Daman!! To get to where the TCs are for OTC barrels is gonna cost more money and most of us aren't gonna like that one bit.  :-\

Aren't the new rossi's pretty much in line with the current H&Rs?

Why can't the hinge pin be made adjustable with a cam lobe front surface & a set screw?  There's got to be a way to take out the slack.

Yes, but they aren't made in the US, they're made in Brazil, cheaper labor costs.

With the higher labor costs I wonder how much they are spending now to hand fit each barrel to a receiver before they can even sell it?  Seems like saving that would offset some of the higher machining costs for modern tolerances?

They don't hand fit like we do, they have a manually controlled machine that does it, watch the tour video in the FAQs.

Thanks for the report Macphoto.  I've been reading other reports but of course noone mentions NEF.  I don't know what they're thinking! ??? ;D

OOOooooo, a Buffalo Classic in .30-30!!!  Now there's an idea, why didn't I think of that?
