I use the same dies to load for a Remington 760, Rem 700, and a Savage 110 all in .270 Winchester. No problems but let me step back to when I was a kid with my Remington 760 in 270 Winchester. When I had a hundred pieces of brass in 270 I went to the guy who ran a local gunshop and reloaded for customers. He asked that I bring my rifle in with me. He adjusted the sizing die to make sure the case functioned in my rifle. I had no problem with the loads, and was pleased that I paid for them with my haying money.
I spent a summer on a fire crew away from home. Dad bought a younger brother a M760 and he helped himself to my ammunition. The ammunition was returned because it would not function correctly in his rifle. There was a slight difference in the chambers and mine was larger than his.
Once I was on my own and purchased a press, and reading on the subject a lot I started measuring cases for length. I found those original cases had grown after a couple of loadings. I bought a Forester case trimmer and that was a good fix.
But there was more to be learned. The 270 Winchester case length shown in my manuals is 2.540. But I found that new unloaded brass that I purchased was longer than that. Next I put my calipers up against factory loaded ammunition and found out the case length exceeded 2.540.
While I load to each rifle, the M760 is the dedicated 150-grain rifle. The Savage 110CL was the 130-grain rifle, but once the 140-grain bullets came out that was the bullet of choice.
The last buck I took with the Remington 700 was with 150-grain Hornady SP that I had loaded for the Remington 760, no functioning problem. When I was at the range I tried a few of that batch in the Savage 110CL and there was no problem.
I think the problem was the long case neck between my brother’s rifle and my 760. One of the clues was when I started having problems chambering a round, which lead to trimming the case neck. My rifle was manufactured in the early 1950’s; his rifle was purchased in 1964. Most likely a different reamer cut his chamber. I trim to 2.540.
