Naval 24 Pounder Axles
« on: January 26, 2010, 11:05:31 AM »
Got back to work on my model Naval 24 Pounder and spent some time on the lathe making 2 piece brass axles which will be epoxyed into the wood axle beams.
Started with 1/2" brass and turned the .250 stem which will go into the axle beam, the 3 grooves are for the epoxy to hold them in place until they get cross drilled and through bolted into the carriage cheeks. The outer end is threaded 10-32 TPI with an Acorn Die. The outer axle and hub was also turned from 1/2" brass centered, counterbored, drilled and tapped 10-32 TPI. The larger hub on the outside will be crossdrilled for the axle pins, they will basically only be decoration.
The ends of the 3/8" axles will be c'bored 5/16" dia. about 1/8" deep and I'll epoxy a Jatoba wood plug into end and face to a domed shape.

I'll post more pics. when I get them crossdrilled and the Jatoba inserts into the end of the axles.

I'm with Mike, Tracy, an DD, post your construction pics. when working on a project. It's great to see the construction photos.

They're definitely a useful thing to have.
