deer loads in 5.5" 45Colt Redhawk?
« on: November 01, 2003, 10:45:12 AM »
Any suggestions for deer loads in a 5.5" 45 Colt Redhawk?
I'm considering the Hornady 250gr XTP JHP with 20.8gr 2400,also the Penn Bullet's 270gr "Thunderhead"full wadcutter.
Any others?
Thanks.

My load for two Ruger .45 colt Vaqueros is 26 grains of H110 over a 250 cast.  H110 will give you better velocities with same pressure loads.

Just something to try if you want to experiment.  As a note, these loads are only recommended for Ruger single actions based on the blackhawk frame, but I would think that the super red hawk would handle them well enough.

Good luck!

I use two bullets. A 300 grain Cast Performance long flat nose gas check, or a 300 grain Hornady XTP. I load both over 15.5 grains of 2400 for about 1100 fps. Accuracy is excellent. Recoil is stiff, but controllable in my Ruger Bisley.

I like a 300-340 grain hard cast with 21 grains of 110 it seems to give good acuarcy and kills very well and the recoil is still pretty mild

I guess I come down in about the same place. I used 250 and 300 GC cast bullets with 2400 in my 7.5 inch redhawk years ago. I think the 300 was my favorite on deer.
