Wolf Hunting Derby
« on: January 29, 2010, 10:59:42 AM »
I posted this in the Preditor hunting forum, but many of you don't go there.  So I am posting it here as well.  Got an alert from Defenders Of Wildlife today.  They are now trying to raise money to fight a supposedly Wolf Hunting Derby.  Actually I read somewhere it was a Coyote Hunting Compatition.  Defendersd claim Sportsmen For Wildlife are using the entry fees to pay attorneys to help keep wolves off the endangered species list so they can be killed.  The big corporations they claim that are sponcering this compatition.  I think we need to let the corperate headquarters know how we feel as well.  Here is a copy of the e-mail I recieved.

How much is a wolf’s life worth?

Three points -- according to Idaho’s misleadingly named Sportsmen for Wildlife, who recently held three “predator derbies,” competitions where contestants vied to see who can kill the most wolves and other animals over a two-day period.

Urge corporate sponsors of these brutal wolf-killing competitions to withdraw their support right now. Sign our petition today.

Cabela’s and Sportsman’s Warehouse -- two major outdoor retailers -- sponsored the derbies, with the entry fees for these brutal competitions funneled to support anti-wolf lawyers and lobbyists working to keep wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the northern Rockies off the endangered species list… and squarely in the crosshairs of those who would do them harm.

Urge Cabela’s and Sportsman’s Warehouse to withdraw their support for wolf-killing derbies. Sign our petition now.

Predator derbies targeting wolves are a hold-over from a more brutal time.

It was a time when wolves were hunted, poisoned and trapped to extinction in Greater Yellowstone and the northern Rockies, a time before wildlife biologists recognized the important role that wolves play in healthy and balanced western ecosystems.

We’ve learned a lot since that dark time. Since wolves were reintroduced to Greater Yellowstone and central Idaho fifteen years ago, we’ve seen local ecosystems rebound as these top predators helped prevent overgrazing of foliage by elk and deer.

According to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, there are 150,000 elk in Montana, compared to 90,000 in the mid 1980s when wolves started to make their way back to the state. Wyoming's elk population is up 35% since then to 95,000, while Idaho's is up 5% to 115,000.

Don’t let the health of our Western lands -- and the wildlife they support -- be sacrificed to appease anti-wolf hatred. Take action now and let Cabela’s and Sportsman’s Warehouse know that wolves are an essential part of the American West.

We know that your voices can make a difference. In November, an independent grassroots campaign convinced Nikon, a previous corporate sponsor of these predator derbies to withdraw their support. Please take action now.

Defenders of Wildlife is committed to working with responsible businesses, ranchers, conservationsists and concerned citizens to ensure a lasting future for wolves in American West. But we need your help.

Please take action right now. Sign our petition today and forward this message to at least three friends.

I'm on Cabela's web site regularly and buy from them regularly as well. I'll be in Anchorage next week and will no doubt make a trip to Sportsman's Warehouse too.

I have a Tee shirt with Bruce Moose standing beside a super cub on skis, holding a rifle.  The caption above the scene says "Keep The Herd Healthy" Then below the scene it says "Smoke A Pack A Day"  On the pocket there is a picture of what looks like a pack of cigarettes, with a wolf on the pack.

The people down here in Florida don't think it is right, they get upset when they see it.  Toooooo Bad.

Sourdough are you in Fla. now? I missed that some how. Welcome! I live near Plant City,Fl. here in town there is a section called Walden Lake. The old timers here in town know the area as mud lake. Well when the Walden Lake people came to town one of the things they built was a polo club. When I was working construction, one of the workers came up with a T-shirt design that had a buck toothed cowboy sitting on a broken down looking buck toothed horse with it's ribs sticking out. Under the picture the caption read Mud Lake Polo Team. Man oh man when the people in the home office saw those shirts they hit the roof. It was funny to see. It was no big deal at first but the more they objected the more shirts got sold.

I have a Cabelas Visa card and order from them all the time. I'll have to call them and thank them for their support.

Speaking of wolf populations in Yellowstone, anyone ever hear of Jami Rappaport Clark? Might have her middle name misspelled, however, she is a rabid anti-hunter, and she was in charge of the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife a little bit ago. During her term of office, she got , shall we say, "Miffed" with the slowness to re-introduce the wolf back to Yellowstone, so she "acquired" 50 of them, I believe from Canada, and had them introduced into the eco-system of Yellowstone National Park. These creatures were all infected with Ecinococulus, which is a deadly type of tape worm, in my understanding. This "bug" can survive for months, even over a sever winter of temps down to 60 below, is passed thru fecal and urine waste of the wolf, and has infected the Bison and Elk populations of Yellowstone and the surrounding area. The ranchers there shoot on site the Bison or Elk that wander off the Park. This can be passed to humans by eating the flesh that is in contact with this worm, and is deadly. It forms a cyst, which is very painful and must be surgically removed. If the cyst is opened, the spread is rapid and fatal. Anyway, I posted this only as a word of caution, and don't believe me, check it out for yourselves. ...just saying....BoomLover

Think of a 150lb Coyote on steriods, that's a wolf.

Rusty:  I am bouncing between St Petersburg and Orlando right now.  Have been for the last two weeks.  Leaving tomorrow for Ft Lauderdale.  Planning on making the strawberry festival in Plant City.  Rog

I maybe wrong but this sounds a lot like "don't eat the meat"  "Don't hunt for food"
maybe don't hunt at all.

If rebuilding the wolf population has improved the elk heards so much, just
think what would happen if the wolves were gone and hunting seasons expanded and limits increased. ;D
