Latch Engagement Inspection Viewport

I removed the inspection viewport plugs on a couple of my rifles using my compact, high-tech viewport plug removal tool, one is a 2007 nickel SB2, the other is a 2008 Stainless SB2(45-70 Ultra), the 2007 has a barrel I fitted, the 2008 is factory fitted, they appear to have changed the index mark on the latch, dunno if that is the acceptable range on the 2008 or not, but looks good to me, both have nearly the same amount of engagement, mine appears to have just a tad more indicated when smoking the shelf for fit.

EDIT: To remove the plug, you must remove the hammer and trigger group including the latch and transfer bar per Perklo's trigger hone info, a good time to do a trigger job. Adjust the "tool" so it just fits in the frame opening, hold the spark plug cap against the plug with a needle nose visegrip and turn the nutted screw(or hex head) counterclockwise with a small end wrench, as it expands it will force the plug out.


EDIT: They both measure about .055"-.060" as best as I can measure them, the 2007 frame has my 500S&W barrel on it, neither has popped open with max loads, and that would be Ruger loads for the 45-70.

Tim.....do you remember what size machine screw you used to make the tool.I have a couplemore barrels coming.......and the way it goes with my SB2 frame I'm affraid I'm gonna have to fit them as well.  :-\

I dunno, I think it's metric, it's smaller than 8-32 and a 6-32 won't work in the sparkplug cap. Best advice is take a sparkplug cap to the hardware store and try some screws in it, then get a nut for the screw unless you can get one with a hex head.

Trial and error, I just dug around in the spare parts bin until I found a screw that the cap fit, then looked for a nut to fit it.
