Single Action Revolvers and High Velocity Ammo
« on: January 31, 2010, 02:37:22 PM »
Friends:
What is your experience with single action revolvers and high
velocity ammo? For instance, I am aware that Ruger revolvers
are built like tanks and take quite a pounding from heavy ammo.
But, can revolvers like Uberti Cattleman in .357 mag caliber take
a steady diet of high velocity ammo? Or, is it best to just shoot
standard .357 ammo through them?

Thanks and have a great week,
Rifle Man

.357 Magnum "standard" loads ARE high velocity loads. Use your loading manual (preferably two or three loading manuals) and do NOT exceed maximum listed loads.

your cattleman should take any factory ammo without a problem. Only thing is if your refering to high velocity ammo that is high velocity due to shooting lighter bullets very fast any gun will eventually run into forcing cone wear. Fast light bullets a big charges of powder create errosion there

I would not go over the loads in your reloading manual. I use 4 manuals. The Uberti is a Colt look a like & has the same limitations as the Colt. I wouldn't shoot a heavier than normal load in it & as said before most .357 mags. are heavy loads.

The light bullet at high velocity was the downfall of the 357max, and can cause similiar problems in the mag as well as relatively poor accuracy.  Best accuracy with the 357 mag is usually obtained with mid; 158gr to heavy 170-180gr, which will also give your revolver a long effective life.  I've got a 357max DW that's had a steady diet of 200gr bullets since 1992 and is still performing well.  Hyper velocity, light bullets damage the forcing cone and cause top strap etching.  If you want to go fast; go single shot like Handi or T/C, no forcing cone or top strap to damage.
