Is a chrome lined ....
« on: March 15, 2010, 04:33:49 AM »

Can I shoot steel shot thru a 70's vintage Beretta shotgun with chrome lined bores.  Its a BL3 over and under and as of now only sits in the safe.

Can you? Yes.

Should you? Most likely not. I think that was from before the days of steel shot and not many guns and even fewer doubles whether SxS or O/U from those days are recommended for steel shot use. If you do make darn sure to use a fairly open choke unless you want it to blow the end of barrel out to a new size. I doubt I'd use tighter than IC and really if it were mine I'd just not use steel at all in it.

GB's right on this one . Doubles of any kind are usually even thinner than their single barreled brethren as far as thinness of barrel tubes as the makers try to keep the weight down and the barrels a prime place to cut weight especially if there are 2 barrels out there.. The good news is there are other non-toxic shot options that are safe for thin walled barrels. The non-toxic shot scene has been changing lately but contact a local dealer or check the websites of Federal and Remington for some choices..

Graybeard...
Thanks for the sage advice...I think I'll keep my full and modified chokes.

Gunnut69...
appreciate your tossing out some alternatives to steel.  I'll do some web searching to see what I find.
