1894 stock questions
« on: January 26, 2010, 05:28:01 AM »
I had a cool little 357 follow me home. Its a 1894 in 357 with the short barrel (Trapper)? Anyways Its in good shooter shape just the fininsh needed some attention. I already stripped it down and I am giving it a few coats of tru oil. It has a hole drilled in the stock about 3 inches from the bottom of the butt plate. Did the 1894 have that little white button inlayed like the 336 models? Also, it currently has a very poor fitting winchester butt plate mounted on it. Was there a factory recoil pad or just a plate? I would like to return the gun to factory styling. Thanks

It did have the Bullseye & I believe a black plastic buttplate.

Mine came with a rather hard rubber butt plate. Also, has the inlayed swivel plugs.

As Swampman says, that's Marlin's trademark bullseye.  Someone probably drilled it out to put a sling swivel in there which is a big No-No.  You can get a bullseye replacement from Marlin, Midway or Numrich.

I just replaced a Marlin Bullseye in the stock of a friend's 336.  I got it from Numrich.  It looks like it came from the factory now!  (Actually, even better, because nobody at the factory would or could have taken the time and care I have taken with the finishing job.)  In addition to refinishing the stock I have almost completely disassembled the action and cleaned it thoroughly.  I am more impressed than ever with how well the 336 action is made .  The rifle was made in 1974.  The disassembly (and reassembly) of the 336 action was done following photographs of the disassembly of an 1894.  There is no significant difference in the two.

does Numrich also have the white spacers that go between the butt pad
and stock and the pistol grip cap and stock?

FWIW, Marlin individually fits every rifle's BP & PG cap, including the spacers.
When the spacers yellow, a touch of emory cloth turns them white again.
When spacers shrink from age, or go missing - "used" replacements may/may not fit YOUR rifle's stock, as in: "too small".

"New" spacers are supplied oversize & must be fitted, as in: the outer edge sanded even with the stock.

Since new spacers usually need to be fitted anyway, white line spacers are easily made from empty/cleaned white plastic household bleach bottles.

Just cut an oversize piece from the side, and attach it in place (held by the buttplate & screws).

The excess white plastic is easily pared down to wood level with a small/sharp carving/pen knife blade.

seems like the bleach bottles would be too thin
