Petemi....
« on: January 29, 2010, 01:58:12 PM »
Pete, is RogersCity anywhere near you? (I know this isn't a "handi" topic, but wanted to share this here with the people on this area of the site.)

I just got an email from a buddie. MONSTER Cougar shot near there. The guy in the pic is 220lbs and just under 6' tall.... The story goes he was deer hunting in a tree when the cat passed him at a distance down wind. A short time later the cat walked past again a bit closer. Again juat a short time later the cat crossed UPWIND much closer this time he dropped the hammer on him... Who was hunting who?

QUITE A CAT!!!

I figured there was more to the email.. But I gotta say, unless there is some photoshop "alterations" of this pic, there is no way that that cat is only 190 lbs.  :o ;)

I've seen the same picture saying the cat was shot in Texas and Oklahoma.

I don't think they get that big in the wild, maybe one that's been pen raised, adult toms average 150lbs, so 190lb would be a big one, double that weight seems a stretch.

Agreed, but that pic, unless its altered shows a bigger cat than 190lbs.

That is a big cat!  Looks pretty heavy bodied but don't think it's 300.  The biggest I've seen taken around here was about 180 when they got him in town and weighed.  They spook me more than the bears or moose we got here in Montana, why I never go unarmed out and about.  DP

I'd not put too much confidence in what you've heard about that photo. I could be mistaken, often am, but that looks a lot like JJ Hack our Hunting in Africa Moderator and a cat he took quite a few years back. The photo has been making the rounds of the internet for quite a few years.

Might not be Jim but that photo looks like him and it looks like the photo of him with a cat he took a good long while back.

Saw the same picture about a year ago and it said that it was shot in Isanti, MN which is about 4 miles from me.  A friend of mine dispelled the myth with a snopes.com search.  I do believe that there are cougars in the area, but this one wasn't shot here.

I have seen that many times and was always wondering the real story. I had no doubt in my mind as to the size, although I have personally never seen one that large. I do see quite a few living in Idaho, I have lived there since 2003. I am always up in the mountains, desert canyons, scouting, hunting and taking outdoor photos. As many times as I have seen them it was not untill 09 that I decided to buy a tag (always afraid that if I bought a tag I wouldnt see one). Now my cat (female) was not as large a this one. For refference I am 5'9" 185lbs unclothed. I will say however that I have seen some large ones. I just wonder why people will take someones photo and make up a story, then pass it around. I just dont get it.

The hoax is the email that's been floating around for over 7yrs, read the truth at the bottom of the snopes page, Bill's and Stimpy's replies, the cat was shot by Roy Hisler in Washington in Dec 2002, weighed 190lbs, Jim Hackewitz (JJ Hack) is shown in the pic holding the cat.

I know it was over 190,(unless the pic is altered) if you read threw the post the scale is calibrated to 100# only and is off some between 5-10 pounds for every 50 or so after that.. SO, turns out the cat was over 200.
But DAMN, it sure looks even bigger than that!!

...They spook me more than the bears or moose we got here in Montana, why I never go unarmed out and about.  DP

Remember they will not attack you if you are facing them, that is why most human attacks are complete surprises. Have you seen the scary face masks many of the Asian big cat handlers were back to front when they are around the cats? You are a two legged deer as far as they are concerned and can't run anywhere near the speed of a 4 legged deer. They prefer to jump on your back while you are walking, jogging, and try and fit your head in their mouth, they will usually kill you by doing that as those teeth are so big they will easily crush and puncture your skull and they will rip your scalp off into the bargain. Even if they attack you and left you alone immediately afterwards and walk off, you would die from loss of blood if they got a good hold. Anyone that has any sympathy for these wild animals after they attack a human just doesn't understand how dangerous they are.
