Scope Recommendation
« on: March 12, 2010, 03:49:27 AM »
I am looking for recommendations for a scope for my NEF Ultra Varmit .223?   Currently it has a Nikon 3X9, that needs to be on a different rifle.   Suggestions?

Another Nikon? I can vouch for Leupold and Bushnell also.

No, probably no more Nikon's.  I have 3, and the 2 Tasco Worldclass scopes I have (old scopes 3X9X50) are brighter and sharper than the Nikon's.  So which Buschnell, or Leupold models?

One of my favorites for a .223 is the Bushnell Elite 3200 7-21. That's a really nice power range for what I do with .223 rifles. But depending on the use you'll put it to that might be way too much. How are you gonna be using it Mark?

I`m a Leupold fan, but the good old 3 x 9 is the best all around scope you can get.

I have been satisfied with the Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 AO on my NEF 223.

Old shooter, Depending on the range your wanting to shoot would depend on the power you need. I have a 6 1/2 x 25 on my .22-6mm and find that out to 400 yrds. or so I prefer using 6 1/2 X. When I get out to 800 or so I do like the 25 X setting. Your 6mm should do well out there a fur piece if you have a good drop chart and a good range finder.

800 yards!!!!  :o  Man when I see something at 800 yards I get in the truck and drive a bit  closer!  ;)  I shot at a coyote at 1100 yards once. Held over 3 foot and hit a foot to the right and a foot below his front paws. After that I figgered I better improve my stalking skills!

MY old leupold 3x 9 from the seventies with manual parallax adjustment has done a good job but my eyes aint as good as they were then, Thinking of sump'n with a lock on "beep" to let me know when to squeese these days. Kinda like a fighter jet, ya know  ;D

Old Shooter,
I still have several of the old 3 x 9 Leupolds on varmint rifles and on big game rifles and they are still my go to all around scope. BUT, you know how it is when you get into a 1 up with a buddy and start tring to out do each other. Before I shot out the throught on my .22-6mm I shot a group just under 2 in. at 600 yrds. I had the barrel set back and rechambered but my old loads were to hot for the new chamber so I have not grouped it since I got it back. I also have another barrel in .22-6mm commine for the gun so when this one is shot out I won`t miss a beat.

You should take a look at the new Redfield Revolution scopes. Just bought the 3x9x40, and I'm impressed. Leupold bought the Redfield name, and manufacture this scope in their Oregon plant. So, it's made in the USA, lifetime warranty, it's as bright and clear as my high dollar Burris, and it's getting great reviews. My local gunshop is selling them as fast as they come in for 147$. Found mine at midwesthuntersoutlet.com for 127.99. For the quality , it's a great deal.

Wow, sorry guys for being absent on this thread.  I admit to getting old and having forgotten that I posted it.  A thousand pardons... Now, thank you for the responses.  The intended use on the NEF is some moderate range varmit shooting.  I was thinking that a higher magnification range than what I currently have (3X9) would be a good idea.  There are a lot of scopes to consider, and I see that each shooter has a preferred scope.  Thanks again.  I will get busy checking into these and rex6666,  good idea to check the site sponsor as well.

I am really pleased with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 x 40 on my .204.   Occassionally I would like a little more on the top end but really all you usually see with more power is mirage.  My buddy only uses more than 14-16 when he is on a bench and wants to check his groups at 200yd.

I have a Weaver V-16 4x16x42mm AO with Fine Crosshair / Dot Reticle on a Custom Ruger 77/22 .22 LR, a Mueller 4.5x14x40mm AO APV on a Ruger K77/22VBZ .22 LR and a new Bushnell Elite 3200 4x12x40mm AO on a DPMS Panther Bull 20 .223 AR-15. I also have a 1.5x4.5x32mm Bushnell Elite 3200 Firefly on a 16" Bushmaster AR-15, and a 3x9x40mm Bushnell Elite 3200 Firefly on a 20" Remington Model 700 SPS in .308.

I like all of these scopes and would buy them again in a heartbeat. However the one that impresses me the most is the Mueller 4.5x14x40mm AO APV. These are a lot of scope for the $115.00 price tag. Everyone that looks through mine can not believe how crisp and clear it is for a $115.00 Scope.

A buddy has the same scope on a Ruger K77VT in .223, and both my nephew and future son in law have the same scope on thier Ruger K10/22T's. No one has had a lick of trouble with them as yet.

I have a Bushy Trophy 3-9 x 40 Mildot reticle on my 223 Handi and like it alot.  It has given me several years of good serviceand will hold its zero.  They have one in a regular reticle too if you don't like the mildot.  It's around 120 bones.
It's all a hot mess...........

I have a Cabela's Centerfire tactical 3X12X40 on my .223 Ultra.  This scope has a side focus, that I really like.  But once you get it focused the yardage dial does not read the true yardage to the target.  So I still use my lazer Rangefinder.  It came with a turrets for 50, 55, and 60 grain bullets.  I use 50 and 60gr bullets and find the turrets dial in good out to 300 yards.  I have not shot it beyond that range yet.  I did use it for some Beaver last fall at 200 yards.  I was able to make two head shots.

Just for fun I tried a Weaver Gland Slam 6x20 with fine cross and dot on a G2 with 23' in 223. Sighted it in at 100 yards and may just leave it. I have used VariX II 3x9 exclusively for years but liking higher power these days.  Started with some VariXIIIs in 3.5x10 then tried some Weaver V10s and uped it to Grand Slams in 4x14 and the 6x20.

I have been doing a lot of thinking on scope magnification.  I felt that my 3x9 on a .223 was underpowered.  Most of my farmland shots are 1-200 yd.  very seldom longer.

Then I watched a show about US snipers and they use 10x fixed and shoot past 1000yd.  There must be a reason for that.
Also in Rifleshooter magazine the guy who does the scope articles stated that he has seen the best high dollar variables fail and that all are potentially hard to get repeatability through the power range.

Actually when I first started predator hunting I used a weaver 6x, and it was fine.
I think the higher power range is harder to hold steady myself.  So I think the 3x9 will be fine.
It is a Bushnell legend, great scope for the money.

Heart Beat is the problem.  With some people it comes into play at 10 power, for others it is not a problem until 15 power.  Check it out, find someone with a scope higher than 15 power then sit down and get as stable as possible.  Snuggle into the stock and select a target.  Then watch the target jump sideways every time your heart beats.  Mine swings right, then back left half as much, then settles on the target till the next heart beat.

When shooting long distances (700 to 800 yards) where I have the scope cranked up to 15 power, I have to time my shot to fire during the stable time between heart beats.  I've learned how to slow my heart beats to give me a longer time to make the shot.
