A Grandfather Story
« on: May 23, 2010, 08:35:27 AM »
I really am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this in, but if not I apologise and hope it can be moved where apropriate. I'm a Cherokee Story Teller and I tell both traditional and stories that I write myself. They usually have a moral or humor and sometimes both. Here is one I wrote in a series I call Grandfather Stories. I hope you enjoy it and I apreciate any feed back. Also, feel free to share anything I write with others. A story is nothing without someone to listen. If you enjoy them, and Mr. Graybeard doesn't mind, I'll post more. May the Creator smile down on each of you and may you always walk in beauty...... A True Friend - A Grandfather Story

The little boy was very upset. Someone whom he thought was a close friend he found to suddenly be anything but. What was worse, he couldn't understand why? The little boy did as he always did when something troubled him. Something he just could not wrap his young mind around. Something, try as hard as he might, he just could not understand, he went to ask his grandfather. He knew his grandfather would have the answer. He always did. He found his grandfather sitting in his favorite place, in the shade beneath a huge old Cottonwood tree growing alongside a stream. He was fitting a string to a new bow he'd just made. A quiver full of new arrows lay by his side. Grandfather greeted his grandson, and seeing the troubled look on his young face, asked what it was that disturbed him so. The boy told his grandfather about his used to be friend who for some unknown reason suddenly wasn't. No exsplanation, just the cold shoulder, and worse yet, other supposed friends followed suite. His grandfather looked down at the small figure of his grandson and began to speak. "Grandson, you will find that there are times in life that you won't quite live up to others exspectations of what they wish you to be. You will find it no longer matters to them who you really are. They see you only as they wish to see you and nothing in their minds or hearts will allow them to see you otherwise. Their eyes refuse to see the truth of things. There are times that all the good things you ever did will be forgotten because of one simple failure.... as they see it. There will be times when there are those who no longer wish to know you because of something someone else said about you and it matters not one bit the truth of the words. They see, they hear, they believe only what they wish to, and do so because in some sad way it makes them feel better about themselve's, makes them feel more important than you. But do not let it trouble you grandson, for if you look to the heart of things.....you will see you are not losing a true friend......for to a true friend these petty things will not matter. They will care about you for who you truly are and will see into your heart and know the truth and beauty that lies there. They will help you through your troubles, not judge you for them. They will be there when you need them, not just when they need you. Remember this grandson, one true friend is worth thousands of false ones." Then Grandfather placed his hand on his grandson's shoulder, looked down at him and smiled. He handed his grandson the bow and quiver of arrows that he'd been working on, saying, " These are your's grandson. I made a mistake in making them. It seems that they are too small to fit my hands. Whats say we go hunting so you can try them out? " The little boy suddenly forgot his troubles in an instant, he took his grandfather's hand and right then and there knew what it meant to have a TRUE FRIEND......and go hunting they did......So says Spirit Hawk ^i^
