Another new toy...
« on: May 06, 2010, 01:10:07 PM »
I went out this morning trout fishing, and got rained on, so I decided to stop at a couple of early yard sales on the way home.  I spotted this .308 pre-64 model 70 featherweight in one of the garages.  It has a steel tubed Weaver K-4 scope with fine cross hairs mounted in pivot rings.  It is in about as good a shape as a 48 year old rifle can be.  $500.00.  When I come upon deals like this, I always tell myself its the right thing to do, as I can always sell it for twice what I paid for it.  But I never do, so I am broke, but have a packed safe.  Time to hit the range again.....  ;D

I think it really depends on where you live.  When I lived in CT, any sort of gun was rare at a yard sale.  Here in PA, and up in Maine, you see it all the time.  Often its "grandpa's old gun" laying around collecting dust that people just want to get rid of.  I had a friend that worked at a pawn shop in CT back in the 80's.  It was amazing what people would walk in with; old Colts, Winchesters, etc.  He would look at their Winchester 1886 in nice shape, then show them a new model 94 for $250, and tell them that the best he could do for a used lever action was $150.  People in the know laughed and walked out, those that didn't thought it was a fair deal.  On this model 70, there was no price tag on it yet, so I offered $500.  I knew it was a low ball price, but they were happy with it.  You could tell they thought it was more then it was worth.  Good deal all the way around.

Well, a 270 would have been nice, or any long action round for that matter, but then, I have never seen a .308 bullet bounce off a deer...lol

I think you are right. In Arkansas, I have seen maybe 1 gun at a yeard sale, but I do confess I don't frequent them either. When we had our house, the neighborhood would have a big yard sale each year, but the HOA said no guns could be sold. I always had people ask if I had guns for sale.
