suggestions for 264 mag bullet on Mule deer
« on: January 28, 2010, 04:54:11 PM »
Hello-

I am looking to work up a new load for my custom 264 win mag.  The Hornady 129 gr SST's I've been using are very accurate, but are "blowing up" on deer.  Lots of shrapnel and a very large entrance hole.  The muzzle velocity is around 3050 fps.  Even on deer taken at 250 yards I didn't like what I saw.  I was considering the 120 gr Barnes Tipped Triple Shock or 130 Grain Nosler Accubond.  Any feedback or recipe's for loads would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Jasper –

I am not a fan of cup-and-core bullets when impact speeds can be over 2600fps for the reason you cite and others.

Fortunately there are many good alternatives.  In no particular order, North Fork SS, Barnes TTSX/MRX and Speer Grand Slam are all bullets I have used with the desired results. My hunting buddy has used Speer Trophy Bonded with good results.   At the same time I would not hesitate to use Swift A-Frame or Hornady GMX.  (I load 120g A-Frames in my .257 Roberts but have yet to take any game with them.)

Forgot to add:  For my custom 6.5-06AI I'm running the 130g Swift Sricocco II.  Not a .264WM but should be a good bullet for that, too.

I would suggest the 140 gr Accubond or if you can find some, they are no longer made, the 140 gr Speer Grandslam.  I used to shoot the GS out of my 264 winnie and they performed absolutely awesome on deer and especially elk.

:D I had the same problem with the .264's I had years ago...Now there are more bullets available than at that time...Several of us shot 264's  and we finally went with Nosler 125 grain part. and some 140's...there are others on the market that do as well I am sure, but these are the oldest and still some of the best....

Why don't you just swap the ssts for interbonds?

I think the 130 gr Nosler Accubond is the perfect deer bullet for my 264 mag. I have a custom 700 Rem with a Shilen 27 3/4 inch barrel. I worked up a load to 66.5 grs Retumbo, CCI 250 primer, A reformed WW 7mm Rem mag case necked down to 264 and my rifle shoots best with the bullet 10 thousands off the lands. It will shoot groups in the .4's at 100 yards, just a ragged hole for three shots, and the bullet is going 3350 fps average. I killed 4 deer with this combo this year from 275 yards down to 98 yards. On the buck at 275 that was quartering toward me the bullet hit center of it's front shoulder and exited about the size of a golf ball about midway of the ribs on the offside. Bang flop went this deer. Buck number two was shot at 111 yards broad side through both shoulders with a golf ball size exit. Bang flop went this deer. Deer number three was a doe at 98 yards quartering toward me. Bullet entered center of front shoulder and exited midway of ribs on offside with golf ball exit hole. Bang flop went the deer. Now deer number 4 was a buck that proved to me that the Accubond is the perfect bullet for the high velocity of my 264 Win mag. This buck was at 111 yards, same crossing as deer #2. This buck was almost facing me with just a slight left shoulder angle toward me. I placed the bullet on the edge of that left shoulder. The bullet destroyed that shoulder made soup out of the vitals and dropped that deer in it's tracks. While cutting up the meat I found the bullet in the right ham. It was a text book mushroom with the core very secure to the jacket and the recovered weight was 71 grs. That bullet had to still be doing close to 3200 fps on impact. If it will stay together after hitting bone that fast and travel the length of a good size buck and drop it in it's tracks it has me as a lifetime user.

I never shot a deer with my 264 but I would try the heaviest Accubonds.
I use Rem 140 core-lokts in my 6.5 Roberts, and 6.5-06 and PMC 139 PSP in my 260.  The 140 Cor-Lokt shoots well in my 264 but I haven't killed anything with it.  At 12 lbs, it is too heavy to carry so it is going to become a coyote gun.

I vote another one for the 130gr. nosler accubond.  I used the factory loading from nosler at a claimed 3100 fps.  I shot my deer at about 250 yards and it was quartering away for the first shot and hit right behind its front shoulder and out the other side, taking heart and lungs with it.  The deer went up a couple of steps and then turned around, I shot again and hit it right in front of the shoulder and it came out the other side taking its neck bone (spine) with it and stopped the deer in its tracks.  Both shots were clean pass throughs not hitting either shoulders, but the first one still left a golfball sized hole on exit and the second shot blew a chunk of bone clean through the exit hole.  I was really impressed and would use them again, and when I get my Elk tag I will probably use this same bullet.

Hope this helps

Thomas
