Ruger convertible 45 troubles
« on: March 02, 2010, 12:08:19 AM »
I just bought a Ruger Blackhawk convertible (new).  After the purchase I promptly measured the throats and then sent them to cylindersmith.com to get reamed.  During the time they were in his hands I sat down and read the entire manual and on page 12 it finally mentions that if the serial numbers for the cylinders don't match then you shouldn't take delivery of the gun.  Last night my cylinders arrived (I highly recommed cylindersmith, great work fast!) and sure enough the numbers don't match.  They both fit the gun equally well from what I can tell but it looks like I have to call Ruger today and see if this is going to be a problem.

Anyone else ever had something similar?  The 45 Colt numbers match but the 45 ACP cylinder is one number off (345 instead of 346).  What really chaps me is that if Ruger fits a new cylinder to it, it will most likely come with a .450" throat again.  Will they ream it to .452 if I ask them?

I realize this is my fault but I still think they should have put the note about matching cylinders before page 12 and even then put it in bolder, bigger lettering.  Stupid me.

Call Ruger, they'll make it right. The assembler could have just copied the number wrong.

The last I knew Ruger had a set of Manson reamers for the 45 Colt. I used to do guns for customers now, and then, but I don't know what the policy is now. The reamers were kept in the "Toolroom".

I little old but just FYI. I bought a Blackhawk in 45 Colt the other month, 2009 manufacture date. I bought a 45 acp cylinder off a guy after asking a few questions about fit. I received it the other day & checked into how it fit the frame. It locks up just as tight as the original 45 colt cylinder. Under close inspection with a light it lines up just fine, looking down the barrel. My next test will be with the acp rounds. My gun also happens to be SS & the new cylinder is blued. This may not be the Ruger way(factory fit) but I've heard of other positive reports & thought I'd pass it on. I plan to keep an eye on it during further evaluation.

Here's what Ruger sent me in an email:

Response:
There may have been a mix up. Try both cylinders and make sure they function correctly. If you have any questions or concerns, contact us at 603-865-2442.

There haven't been any problems so I guess I'm OK.  Now I'm trying to get it to stop leading so much by using an LBT bore-lapping kit.  I'm excited to get it up and running the way I want.

I have several Ruger convertibles in .22, .357 and .45. Only a couple of them have serial numbers on the cylinders. Most do not.

I doubt that your gun is leading because the bore is rough; it's certainly possible, but unlikely IMHO.  More likely your bullets are either too small, or too hard for the pressure you're loading them to, especially if they're commercial cast bullets.
