G2 Contender Inline

I just purchased a Contender G2- 209X50 a couple of months ago and have not had the chance to shoot it yet. Now I see that Thompson Center discountinued the G2 inline for 2010. Maybe I am just leary of shooting it now because I am wondering why TC quit production of a great little light weight inline. Did anyone ever have a saftey issue with them? I tought about calling TC but figured they would just tell me the sales of that model was poor. Anyone have any ideas or stories about the G2 inline?

Actually I think they discontinued the .50 cal muzzleloading barrels in 2008 or 2009. I know they have quit making them for a year or two. I have a stainless one and am very happy with it. Have killed a couple deer with it. It is a light rifle that does have a lot of recoil with hot loads. I shoot 100 grains of blackhorn 209 powder with a 250 grain shockwave bullet. You need to get a scope with plenty of eye relief I have been scope kissed by mine more than once (which I have a cheap T/C scope that came in a package with gorilla rings at walmart). If you shoot the Blackhorn powder which I highly recommend Be sure to use the hottest primer you can get. The G2 muzzleloading barrel has a extra long breach plug. As far as the reason they discontinued the muzzleloading G2 I think T/C is slowly phasing out the Contender line as a whole. I think the sales are probably not that good I know my local dealer is not carrying the contender stuff like he was and said he was going to quit stocking it. He used to have a shelves full of rifle barrels for the contender and now he has probably less than ten left. I did some trading with him on a stainless G2 pistol frame and a stainless 23 inch 6.8 barrel a month back. He still has quite a few pistol barrels in stock. He stated the encore is the main seller for the T/C line. He says he has a bunch of the bolt action T/Cs that he hasn't had much luck with selling.

                    Thanks for the response TRM-1 I actually have and encore prohunter and I personally like the G2 better because of the weight and balance. I agree that the breech plug is extremely long and already thought it might cause some inconveniences. I purchased the G2 to use with the open sights so hopefully the recoil won't be an issue.   
                     I was also thinking of purchasing the 6.8SPC or the 223 barrel but haven't decided on which one yet.

I also have the pro hunter and there is big difference in weight between them. In the contender I have  .222 30-30 and also a 6.8 all rifle barrels. I have shot the 6.8 twice just to check the recoil But haven't even sighted it in or grouped it to know how it will do. I have a 18 inch .357 magnum barrel on order from MGM. Hopeful it will come in the next week or two.
    

Once I had a problem with misfires with the .50 barrel and it was a problem with the round piece that holds the firing pins in place being loose. The screw that holds it in place had backed out causing primer hits. Found the problem by chance and was relieved thought the powder had gone bad. You might want to cock the hammer and check the screw to make sure it is tight every so often.

I am sure they stop production on the ML barrel due to low sales.  They couldn't justify keeping the line going.

I have a 209-45 0n one of my G2 and really like it, dealer had the barrel in stock for some time and made me a good trade on it. I have had no trouble with mine but have not hunted with it as yet, bought it mainly to plink with. I use a 225 grn power belt with one 50 grn tripple 7 and at 60 yards it holds a good group. I think the main problem with muzzleloaders is that the market is flooded with them in every brand and companys dont wont to invest in a product that does not sell. TC would not drop a hot seller and right now the Encore and Triump as well as Endiver is their hot sellers. If you wont a deer round in rifle think about the 7x30 waters very mild recoil I killed two deer with mine this year. I also have a 6.8 in the contender. If you go with a 223 then something to think about is that the 1-12 twist does not like a bullet heavier than 55 grns. I had that problem in mine when trying to sight in with 70 grns.
