I have some places where coyotes and coons have been going under some fences. I am planning on setting snares in these locations. I have read where it is best to attach the snare directly to the fence with a small piece of wire, and have the bottom of the loop about 1" off ther ground. Others say to set the snare about 12-14" away from the fence with an 8" loop 1" off the ground. I know this has to be an easy place to catch a coyote or coon. I want to hear from other trappers what works best for them in this situation. (The fence is about 8" off the ground)

Easy...well...First off the fence should be no where that any passers by will see. Secondly, I would not recomend attaching your cable to the wire. I would stake the snare or attach it to a strong post. Coyotes will entangle in the fence and can present you with a mess. If you are in an area which permits dispatch springs and locks I would use them...this will save most of the work of fixing the fence and sewing hides (I'm presuming barbed wire) For coon, again I've seen one in the last twenty years so I can't help much. 1 inch off the ground, 10 inch loop and a fast lock should take both critters.

What I mean by attached to the fence, is that you use the bottom wire of the fence to support your snare. With a light piece of wire or thread. Should the loop be placed under the fence with it tied to the fence, or away from the fence?

Opps I misunderstood. When I snare crawl-unders I hang the snare from the bottum strand of fence. I often use this strand to camo the lock ...the lock is on on side of fence wire. Just make certain that the lock is free to slide and the cable will stay put until a slow moving critter pulls the loop closed. Hope this time I got your question clear in my head.

wooden clothespins also work well for a temp hold for your loop to this bottom strand of fencewire, and the snare pulls out of the pin's grip quite easily enough after it closes down for the catch.
I generally stake the snare off well away from the fence itself to keep a coon or coyote from entangling and hanging up in the fence after the catch also.
