Well, I shot the 209X45 today!
« on: October 16, 2003, 01:42:46 PM »
I haven't been able to shoot the 209X45 since Thompson returned the barrel. The note in the box said they got 1 3/4" at 100 yards with 150 grains of Pyrodex and the 180 XTP bullet. I shot the 180 grain XTP with 80 up to 120 grains of powder and it shot about 6" at 50 yards. I couldn't bring myself to go to 150 grains, which would be a little hot in a tree stand, and if thats the only load it will shoot I will have to go to plan B. On a good note, my 11 year old shot the new Knight with 80 grains of Pyrodex and the 180 XTP 50 caliber bullet about 2-3 inches at 50 yards. I know some are getting sick of my whinning about this rifle so this will probably be my last post on the encore forum, as the encore is history. I would like to wish everyone good shooting and a safe hunt :D . Don

You might want to try a heavy sabot/bullet combo and lighten up the powder.  You probably got a 1:28 barrel back as did I.  So far, mine seems to like 300 grain or heavier bullets and I NEVER go past 100 grains of powder these days.  The White Powerstar 350 grain bullet does pretty well in mine, pain to load but they shoot decent.  300 grain XTPs also show promise in the rifle.  I'm trying to find a conical that will do okay and my Whitworths sized to .450 do - sometimes better than okay.

And, if it's any consolation, your first barrel shot MUCH better than mine.   It was HORRIBLE!  And Don, if you are in a trading mood, I have a good A&H .50 caliber 420 (really) ..... or how about an Optima .45?  ;)

I just got mine new 209x45 with the 1 in 18 twist back from Thompson and I must say this thing shoots great. I have tried both the cfva 195gr. power belt with 105grs of triple 7 which shot 1" at 100 yards and also gave the new hard loading thompson shockwave in 200gr a shot. They shot into 1.125" with 100grs of triple 7. I am going to use the shockwave do to the fact that the powerblets every know and then hav a flyer and I am not into that.

I am not to bright but I would think your barrel is a 1 in 28" or 1 in 20". I am glad you had good luck with your gun. I traded my 209X45 with the knowledge of the problem I had. I also sold the 7MM-08 barrel that I had for it. Thompson couldn't give me a bullet-gun- sabot or anything they make or sell. You may get the feeling I'm a little bitter and you would be right. Have a good day :D . Don

:D  Hi all,, Just wanted to spred the good new's   doninva told us all just today on the ML board he shot a 7 point  with a new  Knight BP rifle. After being dissapointed with his Austin-Halleck, he took the bushnell scope off and put it on a New Knight rifle and shot his buck the very same afternoon!
Well done  doninva :D  :D
