How many have one of these beauties?  I have 2.  How are your VT's shooting?  Any problems?  After the hunting season, I think I am going to have trigger work and adjustment and pillar bed the action on my .308.  I will do the same later to the .243.

What loads?  What powders?  Everyone I know with one is happy with it.

I got one a few months ago in .220 Swift.  This thing will shoot the eyeballs out of a coyote at 250 yards!  My groups with factory loads stay within a nickel at 100 yards.  I love this gun, and it is bone stock.

Mine do pretty good.  Both the .243 and .308 are under .70" groups.  I have found that my .308 liked 3031 powder over 4064.  and the .243 I M still working on a load.

My gunsmith has a VT in .223 and has not done anything to it either and he shoots great.  I really think Ruger came up with a winner when they came up with the VT.  They are heavey but fun to shoot.

I used to use a 155 gr Sierria Palma bullet with Varget. I cant remember the load off the top of my head...

That load won me the Texas state Varmint shoot off a few years back.

So I guess it works ok

Most Accurate Factory Rifle
« Reply #5 on: September 09, 2003, 04:02:15 AM »
Hi Dana et al:

I'm on my second V/T and still in love. First was a used .22/250 which would shoot 1/2 MOA when the old guy on the trigger was doing his part. Traded that for a .223, my real love, and this is the most accurate factory rifle I have ever seen. And, I'm one of the wacked-out guys that really likes the two-stage trigger set-up. It helps ham-fisted guys like me to adjust the trigger down to 1-lb. in a very safe way. I just mounted a Sightron 6-24x42mm scope on this one, to replace the Tasco 10-40x50mm that's been on it for a year or so. The Sightron seems to be a great scope and will work with the original low rings which I really like. 24x is no substitute for 40x, but I'm trying to adapt. After boresighting and the usual sighting-in, this rifle/scope combo has shot several sub .200" five-shot groups at 100 and a best of .395" for five shots at 200 using 40-gr. Hornady Vmax's with 25.5 gr. of H322. I fired 10 5-shot groups at 100 with this load, in front of witnesses, and the largest is .645" and the smallest is .185". Actually had 3 groups under .250" with the average around .350". This rifle also likes 52-gr. Sierra HPBT Match and 55-gr. Hornady V-Max's, both with 24.5 gr. of H322 or 26.0 gr. of Varget.

I'm also a fan of the newer Savage BVSS's and have one in .223 which shoots like a house-a-fire, but group for group it won't outshoot the Ruger. I'm hoping the Sightron will hold settings better than the Tasco so I can try some postal matches, but too early to tell. The Tasco has been a good scope, if you can sight it in and leave it alone. But if you start moving the turrets, it will dance around on you. The Sightron looks more stable, but only time will tell.

I have a Ruger Varmiter in 223 Rem and it shoots 3 shot one hole groups at 100 and well under a 1/2" at 200. I just simply love mine. It's a prairie dog thumper and a coyote widowmaker. I have been thinking of buying one in 243 and 220 swift.

« Reply #7 on: November 18, 2003, 07:54:42 AM »
Just clocked loads in my VT's.

The .308, 3 shot 200 yd <1"
165g GK Moly coated
43.5 g 3031
COL  2.880

2830 fps average of 5 shots.  All 5 were within 15 fps.
Very Happy with this load/Rifle :)  :)

The .243 < .75" 5 shot 100 yd
100 g Interbond Moly coated
37 g 4350
COL  ??

2640 fps average of 5 shots.  These varied by 30 fps.   :?

The .75 g V-max were clocked at 3150 fps.

How are you doing with

The .243 really suprised me.  I thought it would go faster than that.

Regretably,   I used to have one in 25-06 and traded it towards a Weatherby in 30-378.
Needless to say, I'm still kicking myself in the A** for doing it. The gun was a real shooter. I sometimes shoot long distance at water filled milk bottles dropped randomly in a few fields next to my house up to 720 yds away when I get enough bottles together. I hit a 2 liter soda bottle with it at 720 yds.
I was going to have it rechambered to .257 Weathery. But..... It's gone now and I'm still KICKING.
