my new 357 carbine
« on: February 07, 2010, 08:42:58 AM »
just picked up a Handi 357.  Barrel was waaay too long so I cut it off at 18" and re crowned.  I am using a very small red dot sight.  I am also using a Hensoldt 2.6x magnifier from an Austrian rocket launcher to magnify the red dot.  It fits in a standard Weaver ring.  Magnifier goes on and off quickly without tools and zero does not change.  Cheaper Than Dirt sells these magnifiers as surplus for less than $20.  My set up is just about perfect except that Gander Mountain jacked me on the hammer extension so I have to sneak my thumb under the magnifier till I find one.

Interesting , but dosn't the magnifier double the size of the dot as well (make a 5 Moa dot 10 Moa)
?

actually no.  The magnifier magnifies both the dot and the target so the relationship of the dot to the target stays the same.  The dot will appear bigger...but so does the target.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing.

What did the barrel cut cost you or is that something you are set up to do? I have a 44 that I would love to do the same to...

How do you like that new Trophy mini red dot? I was thinking of getting one.

barrel cut cost me about an hour of my time.  Hack saw, file, Brownells muzzle tools, some sandpaper, & cold blue.

The mini red dot is OK.  The field of view is kind of sensitive.  In one direction the red dot gets a little dim if you move your eye from center (not in all directions).  It is still functional but just a little dimmer.  But the overall small size is very nice.

I've done the magnifier thing on ARs. Very sensitive to eye relief. Love the tank reticle. Larue Tactical removes the reticle calls it the Po Boy. Much better deal than the $400 Aimpoint magnifier for the carbine course contractors. The Blackwater types prob still buy the $400 version.

I've seen the video where they show how to use the tools to cut the barrel square.  I can't find them on the Brownells site.  Do you know where to find them?

i bought them out of the paper catalog 20 years ago...I am old school.  I can't find my way around the brownells web site - it is one of the worst web sites I have ever seen.  My kit is called- "Rifle/Handgun muzzle & cylinder facing & chamfering tools"  do a search for this on their site.

Here's the link to the 90 degree tool.  They also have a 79 degree cutter for an 11 degree 'target crown.'
