Finally called some in, ...but no shot. SOOOO cool.
« on: February 07, 2010, 02:10:54 PM »
So yesterday I got out at about 1:30pm.  Called at my first spot, and heard saw nothing.
Went to my second spot accross the river probably 3/4 mile away from the first spot as the crow flies.
Start with the distress once.  Wait. Wait some more. Try again.  Nothing.
Then I start with a howl and barks with a big call and a little call.
Did it a second time about 10 min later.
Out of my periferal view I see one, two, three dogs coming down the edge of the field at a gallop coming in and to my left.

My first successful calling.  It was so freaking cool.  Big beautiful dogs too.  If there wasn't snow on the ground I might not've even seen them. UN believable.

I was on the side of a wooded hill looking down into and across a field.  They were prob 150 yds out. I had lots of tree branches from the hillside in front of me.  They were right out in the open on the far edge.  They ran past the base of the hill and i never saw them again, nor circle around, come in closer, nothing.  :-[  Wind was right in my face most of the time but it was changing direction now and again because I was checking thinking they were going to come in from behind. I obviously set up in the wrong spot too high up the hill, but otherwise it's flat and you have no vantage point.

Anyway, no shot fired but I can't wait to get back out again.

Based on what I've described, where would you have set up or done differently?

There is every possibility that they did come in closer, but they may have scented or spotted you.  Sometimes on a distress call they will ignore scent and come almost to you.  You got to see them....many never do.....

I Know the feeling. It is cool. I'd bet a lot of people sit out there and there are coyotes watching them ;D It happened to me. He saw me first. I watched him watching me. ::) Keep at it and don't move.

Don't have tree branches in front of you and if they are that close bark at them and if they stop be ready and shoot. Good Luck!

I like to use my full periprial vision looking at nothing in particular and everything in general, it makes it easy to spot subtle movement when doing this.

Agreed with bigvarmnt. It can be hard to find the perfect calling site's and you may very well have some brush or trees in the way but try to find the spot that allows some shooting lanes on either side. They really need not be big ones and you do have to be prepared to stop the Coyotes if necessary. Sometimes I will break my own rules and have a thicker patch on one side but figure that I will hear it coming and if that does happen, the shot is going to be a thriller. Just keep in mind that if you are right handed you can easily swing a gun barrel to the left but little to none to the right. I like to sit canted to the right just a bit for this reason.

This (for me) can be the ultimate part of the hunt. A lot of times the Coyote has not seen you but is hunting you for sure. I have had some stand off's where the Coyote stayed in place for a full five min or better and it can seem like an eternity. The Coyote is too wise to spook the game that it is hunting (at least if it wants to eat) and you may have just enough brush or natural man made objects in the way for you to avoid trying to send a bullet to that partially hidden yote. This is where mouth calls can really shine as it is possible to (direct) the Coyote to the area that you want it to go by pointing the barrel of the call in that direction and playing just a few high, feeble, notes.

Good Luck

Wait until you look in a spot briefly, look away, then look back and there is a dog standing 50yds in front of you trying to figure out what you are.  As if it materialized out of mid air.  Predator hunting is just plain fun!!
It's all a hot mess...........

the first few i called in would be on the other side of some pine trees and howl at me at dark.
