Rifle/Handgun Combo
« on: February 07, 2010, 10:55:21 AM »
Since I got the BC carbine I've been wanting to get a handgun to go with it. I'm thinking the Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt should make for a good companion gun. They can both handle .45 Colt +P loads and so share the same ammo loaded hot or not.
Anyone else here doing the same?

I've got two .357 Handis and the SS .357 6.5 inch Blackhawk is their companion.  The Handis are Maxis.

Pete,
The .357 Handi is certain to be my next Handi. I already have a nice S&W Mod. 19 to go with that gun. Like the Handis, there is something special about a nice single action revolver. While I really like the looks of some of the case color frames with blued cylinder and barrel on some of the Colt copies, Ruger revolvers are hard to beat for their strength and reliability. If money were not an issue, John Linebaugh would be getting some work from me.

Big Blue,
Ya just gave me an excuse to post this pic of .357 x 3.

Top: Harrington & Richardson Model 258, mfg in 1986, comes with 2 barrels, one 357 (reamed to Max) and one 20 ga. all nickel plated. Scope is old Bushnell Scopechief 2.75x. I took the original stock off and mounted the wood (BC) from a 45 LC.

Middle: Rossi Puma M92 (Winchester 92 clone) with brass frame (brass plated?) lever gun that my wife fell in love with when we were in our Cowboy/SASS days.

Bottom: Stock 3 screw Ruger Blackhawk. Have had this for years and it one of my toys I will not part with. Sweet and accurate.

Thanks for the opportunity to show off my 357s!  ;)

Cheers
Kerry

Kerry,
I should be the one to thank you for sharing the photo. That's one very nice trio you have there.
I've owned several Ruger single action revolvers over the years, but for one dumb reason or another sold or traded them off for something that I just had to have at the time. For feel and balance my favorite was my last, a 50th Anniversary Blackhawk in .357. Overall though if I could get any of them back it would have to be a S.S. original Bisley Vaquero in .44 Mag. that I owned about 9 years ago.

Don,
I know what you mean. That Ruger is actually my 3rd - I sold the other two over the years. Not gonna do that again!

For years I've always favered a 44mag combo. But with age comes wisdom and I'm a 357 guy now.
Plus the arthritis in my hands prevents me from shooting anything heavy hitting anymore.

I am in the shopping mode right now for a 357 mag Handi to have bored to MAX and then it will complement my 357's as a woods combo!

My Trio/Combo are all 44's. A Ruger SBH/44, three screw, ca. 1971. A Browning B-92/44, ca. 1979 and my Handi/44 wearing a 1898 Krag rear sight.

All shoot the same hand loads 44 spec/ & Mag's. from target to full mag's, and all are tack-drivers.

I have a Ruger GP 100, a security six, and two blackhawks (BHs are .357 maxis) along with three handie .357s one a maxi and a lever gun in .357. I also have a S&W 15-3 in .38. Then I have my .44 mag handi and a .44 SBH to partner with it. If I every get a .45 colt handie it will prolly require me to buy a .45 colt Ruger, Maybe a bisley this time. ;D

I always had an urge to buy one of those original Vaqueros in .45 Colt with the Birdshead grips. I missed the boat on that one, but I still see them for sale once in a while. Probably not the most practical of grip frames, but after watching Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday in Tombstone I just had the urge for one.

I have the combo's in 357, 44 mag and 45 colt.  Rugers, Handi's and levers for them.  Good move to go with the Ruger for the heavier loads you will run in the handi, will keep ya from getting hurt or just ruining a good gun. ;)  I shoot my pistol cartridge rifles more than any other ones.  DP

I shoot my pistol cartridge rifles more than any other ones.  DP

At times like these when powder prices are going up and it's getting harder to find many powders and other reloading components, traditional handgun cartridges just make a lot of sense. I can get a heck of a lot of 250gr. cast plinking loads for a .45 Colt from a 8lb. container of Bullseye. Even heavier cast hunting loads for the .45 Colt using H110 or LilGun use about half the powder of a traditional rifle cartridge, giving me twice the shooting per pound of powder. With most game in my area being taken at ranges much less than 100 yards, these handgun cartridges perform just fine.

Yep a 148gr wadcutter and 2.5 grs of bullseye makes for a lot of good plinking out of a .357. Cast yer own and you can almost shoot as cheap as a rimfire. 8)

My other Combo is, my pair of replica 1851 Navy/44 C&B revolvers. And my Uberti 1866 Remington/44 Revolving Carbine with the 18" barrel. I cast my own round balls for all.
Kinda like driving a Model T, but they are very accurate.

I am teaching my Family the requirements for shooting, maintenance & care of C & B.
Ya never know when this out dated techonology will be seriously needed again.

Besides, 25 pounds of BP and 5000 caps does not require much storage space. ;)

Have always been a big fan of the matching pistol/rifle calibers ... At present my Handi 44mag is joined by my Super black hawk 7.5" ( which holster carries alot better then i would have guessed .
Had a matching Uberti set in 45LC ( Yellow boy Win. design and a Colt Cattlemen SAA)

And of course the 357mag Win trapper lever gun but his play mate had to find a new home, So after taxes come in might be able to get this fun little shooter some company  ;)

Default,
I would think the longer barreled 7.5" handguns have to be a lot easier to shoot accurately, but I've never holstered a 7.5" barreled handgun and was wondering how they are to carry. What type of holster do you use for your SBH? I was looking at maybe compromising with a 5.5" barreled Blackhawk.

I've always considered either of my H&R 258 or 058 combos in .357 Mag and 20 ga along with my Ruger sp101 in .357 Mag as some of the best "woods walking" companions ever.  Light and easy to carry for an old guy!

Big Blue, you can't go wrong going with a Ruger Blackhawk in 45LC to go with your carbine.  I recommend a blue 4 5/8.  Blue instead of stainless because the blue gun is partly alloy and lighter.  4 5/8 because it carries better.  I'm old, and I've been up and down the handgun ladder so many times I got dizzy.  I've had 'em all, in all the barrel lengths.  191l models, Colt single actions, S&W revolvers and autos in every configuration and caliber, but I came back to a plain ol' Blackhawk in 45LC.  Since the .44 Magnum came out, the argument between that caliber and 45LC has been visited by gun writers and shooters, and still there's soldiers in both camps.  There are those who say the LC brass is too weak for hot loads--they say if you want a magnum, get a .44.  I say, if you want a non-magnum that will kill anything you want to shoot at, and which can be loaded to exceed any 44 round, get a 45LC.  My 4 5/8 shoots 300 grn. LFP's under a healthy dose of 2400 into less than 1.25 inches at 25 yards.  The magnum blast is absent, and recoil allows a quick second shot if you need it, which ain't likely.  Custom handguns galore are available.  You can get exotic calibers, trigger jobs, barrel porting, scopes and whatever one might imagine, but a Ruger Blackhawk out of the box is still king of the hill for a hunter's second gun.
And another thing: If your handgun is on your hip and your rifle is in your hand, why the heck would you want to carry around an overly bulky tricked-out handgun. The handgun is to compliment your rifle, to be on your person when the rifle is out of reach, to be a non-burden, but still be potent and deadly.
Get a short-barrel Blackhawk.
