Snow
« on: February 06, 2010, 01:59:25 AM »
Well who's snowed in for the day? Got up to around 14 inches and still coming down real fine :o Sure glad I had a P.h. left, so I could take day off and watch it snow! :)

I sure hope the snow is not as bad as predicted; it could be devastating for some folks.  Funny, when we get two inched everyone goes into a panic, take this advice to heart, when there is ice on the roads of West Texas stay home, most of these folks can’t drive on dry pavement much less ice.

I hope this is not too much for you and that you can stay dry and warm.

Nuttin but rain here in Bama but we sure had plenty of that. We're flooded pretty badly down here and had it fallen as snow I'm sure we'd be buried under a few feet of it.

Up in PA where my friend Barry lives he reports they are snowed in and it's still coming down. It's a dry snow and is drifting badly. His lane that comes off the state road past his house and on up to the farm where is FIL lives is impassable at this time and he was concerned the tractor shed would be under snow from the drifts.

Drifting snow just isn't something I'm familiar with as it's a thick wet sticky snow when it snows at all here. On his farm tho they have to deal with drifts several feet deep when it comes down like this. I don't think I'm cut out for dealing with real winter conditions.

Snow is just a normal condition here, so it's no big deal until the snow fall gets to about 16 inches in one day. Then it slows things down.

Here's an interesting note from today's USAToday:
As of early Saturday, 10 inches of snow was reported at the White House, while parts of Maryland and West Virginia were buried under more than 20 inches. Forecasters expected snowfall rates to increase, up to 2 inches per hour through Saturday morning.

I just measured 26 inches on the ground here this mourning. The weather forecasters said 8 inches in this area, and that was their forecast after it started snowing yesterday evening. Thats not bad missing it by only 18 inches. I knew I should have been a meteorologist. I could have made big money and never have to be right.

I have a plow on my quad, but it ain't going to be able to do much in 26 inches. It takes a good bit of energy just to clear a path a short distance with a shovel.
Now they say there is going to be cold air moving down from the north, so it isn't going to be melting anytime soon. Many are without power. I'm thankful I still have power, although there is a good chance that I will still lose it. There is a lot of snapping sounds outside with all the tree limbs breaking. If I do lose power it will most likely be for three or four days.

Good Luck to everyone in the storm and if you can make it in to Clayton, Delaware stop by and have a warm bowl of veggie soup and corn bread!

FOGGY. What you're getting came through here but the temp saved us, only got a few inches snow, the rest rain. The ground is saturated and some areas are either flooded or will be. It's still 29 deg, we lucked out. Another front due Tues with snow expected up to 5 inches. Good luck. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Put boots on that go just below my knees to clear porch off,and 1st step out went to my knees :o so had to work with wet feet! I measured a couple spots and its 16-17inches and still coming down. I don't mind it till you have to get out in it,or shovel it :-\
So far the power has stayed on but has went off 6-7 times for a few seconds. Haven't seen a car go by for hours, which with a mine portal just down the road is odd.Hope the power stays on for everyone, with the colder air moving in.

We got about 10" - 12" here in Northeast Ohio, south of Akron.  Spent the morning with my two boys digging out the widow next door & the single mom across the street (and of course our place), then went sledding.  Took a while to get it packed down to where you could get any speed up, but after that it did pretty well.  Then back home for some hot chocolate and relaxation.  All in all, a pretty good day.

Here in Winchester VA we got 26" Friday & Saturday then another 6" today with really high winds.
Drifts up to 5' or 6'.
Our 450' driveway drifts closed about every 4 hours.
Quit for the night and will see what I have in the morning.
My real concern is the drifts on the roofs of the building & the house.
Up to 5' was on the house porch before I shoveled it off.
4' on the long shed, worked on that one last night.
Wife's green house will need a new roof this spring, 3' deep on plastic don't work to well.
Schools have been called off for the rest of the week.
Most everything is closed down around town.
More snow coming next week.

Must be that GLOBAL WARMING THING everyone is talking about!   :D ;D

Well, its up to my knees, and the wind is howling, causing some pretty good drifts.  Break time is over - back outside to shovel some more "Global Warming"... ::)

We have not had this much snow in the yard since I moved to this house 8 years ago. We have at least 28" and some places more with the drifts. Now I used to live on the mountain and I remember having 4 and 5 feet of snow in the yard when I lived up there. I about got my 4 wheel drive truck stuck in the yard today after comming home from the store with some food. Dale

As much as I didn't want to part with my '66 Harley, I took the money and bought a small compact tractor. When it snows like this, sure makes cleaning out 300+ feet of driveway alot easier. We had around 8''-10'', and some of the drifts in the driveway were 2'-3' high, and 8'-9' across. I've got snow piled up almost 6' around corners, and pushed back beside my wood pile. Don't need anymore this year.gypsyman
