Handi Scope Ring Height???
« on: February 11, 2010, 06:15:51 AM »
I'm trying to gather up all my goodies to mount a scope on Friday and need some advice. I plan on mounting a Leupold VX III 2x8 and think I can get way with medium height rings but am not positive. As luck would have it out of the collection of rings I have already available I don't have a mediums to try and I want to pick up a set after work today so I can get busy in the AM on Friday.

Thanks in advance!

I installed a Pentax on my 7mm-08 with xtra high weaver quad locks, but it just didn't feel or look right on the gun and I had trouble with hammer clearance so I put a Tasco World Class on with plenty of clearance for the hammer. I guess it would all depend on the bell of the scope.

Mediums should work fine with the Leupold.  You might even get away with lows.  All three of mine have Nikon scopes that I mounted in low rings.

That would be NICE!

The Leupold in question is the older VX III with 32 MM Objective and pretty trim on the Ocular end too. I would be tempted to alter the hammer just so I could get the scope mounted with low rings.

If you trim the hammer a little, the Leupold can more than likely be mounted in low rings, with an old style hammer, you can use extra low rings as shown on 3-9x40 Leupold on the 35Whelen Impr below, rings are lapped Burris Zee extra low(discontinued), there's not much clearance between the turret saddle and the scope rail.  The 2-7x33 Leupold on the 30-06 Ultracomp is mounted in medium Burris Signature Zee rings which are .270" tall from the top of the scope rail to the bottom of the scope tube, lots of clearance.

I haven't mounted a VXIII on a handi, but I have more than a dozen Leupold M8, VXI, VXII and VARI XII scopes on them!! LO rings are perfect, with a stock base and Leupold PRW or Warne MAXIMA rings. I have an older VXIII on a Mauser and it looks like it would fit just fine as Tim mentioned.

Cool, I have a plethora of rings to choose from and will know the cold hard truth tomorrow. I actually considered mounting my VX III 1.5-5X20 on this rifle because it looks cosmetically perfect and has enough "Real-World" performance to match the caliber and intended use. When I start thinking about mounting the Schmidt & Bender I need to step back from the fumes................... ;D

There was a time not to long ago that the straight 4 power was considered fine for long range shooting.  I don't go much higher than 4 or 5 on my 3-9's and have a bunch of 2.5 powers on anything for 200 yds or less.  I like the straight tubes on Handi's and on my levers.  My VX III 1.5-5 is going on my 338 MXLR. ;)  DP

I actually stuck with a peep apertures & K2.5's for most stuff and considered a straight 10X sufficient for varmint rigs in my youth. as I grow older/more mature/blind variables are my friend.  ;D
