This is cool thread especially since i have been to over 150 concerts at 23 years old i have a signed drumskin and stick from vinne paul that he used when i saw damage plan i also have several picks from dimebag. I have 25-30 drumsticks , 40-50 setlists , 50-60 guitar picks and every ticket. My first concert was when i ten years old my dad took me to see Jimmy Page and Robert Plant at the Tacoma dome for their No Quarter tour that was the show that started it all .

Older Country all the way. The new country is not country and it stinks. I have many many CDs. Its the only way I can listen to the music I like. The stations don't play the good stuff anymore. Here's a few:

Keith Whitley (one of the best ever. Died way, way to young)
Alan Jackson
George Jones
Shenandoah
Johny Paycheck
Travis Tritt
Randy Travis
Oak Ridge Boys
Doug Stone
George Jones
Ricky Van Shelton
Waylon
Vince Gill
Ricky Skaggs
Clint Black
Hank Jr.

Cabin4- your list looks like my wife's CD rack inventory!! LOL!

Great stuff, and I would add in Mark Chestnut, Patty Loveless, Mel Tillis & daughter Pam, and on and on, like the early Reba McIntire; got to dance to Buck Owens at his supper club about a year before he passed on. What a treat! I'm not much of a concert-goer, but I have seen Neil Diamond, Eddy Arnold,
Leroy Van Dyke, Johnny Cash, Riders in the Sky, The New Christy Minstrels, and The Sons of the Pioneers.

Er, I probably should add I took the General's front row center table in the Lounge of the Prince Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand (put the "reserved" sign on a different table) for an evening with Ann-Margret and Duane Eddy. This was late '70 or early '71. Not sure exactly, we kinda lived in an alcholic haze over there back then. I got sobered up in 1984, when my first daughter was born, and have stayed headache free.

In May of 1996, I got to shake hands and converse with Roy Rogers! My mother took our picture and said it was the only time she ever saw me speechless. I was awestruck just being in his presence. He was IT in my life in the '50's!!

The Best of the Eagles is in the #6 slot of my truck cd changer, Essential Chet Atkins is in #1....

A few years ago, it was announced on the radio that Paychek's "Take this job and shove it" was the #1 requested song on Friday - normally beginning about 2PM! I got a kick out of hearing that - and have sung it many times, and not necessarily on Fridays!

Sweetwater,

Your wife has good taist in music.

My wife and I have been to a number of country concerts including Ronny Milsap, Doug Stone, Highway 101, Hal Ketchum, Tracy Lawrence....and a few more. But most of that was back in the earlier days of the 80's and 90's when there still use to be real country.

I agree with Reba, Mark Chesnut, Patty, Lorie Morgan, Buck... the list goes on and one. I'm actually getting depressed writing this becasue its reminding me of a better time in this country. Music was/is very important to me and these people remind me of a good time when the music was good as well.

Oh well!

I listen to a bunch of different stuff, but lately my choice has been old Mowtown & soul, pre-disco.  I have no use for hip-hop.  I can't stomach classic rock either, mainly because of the horribly small playlists on classic rock radio stations. If I never hear Hotel California again it'll be too soon, same with Blackdog, Money, or Brown Sugar.  Don't get me wrong, those are all good songs written by good bands, but they've recorded so much more music than what is typically heard on the radio.
I listen to jazz quite a bit for the same reason, and also I believe jazz is probably the hardest form of music to play well.
Country music I can only stomach for a short amount of time before I get tired of it.

What music ?
« Reply #39 on: April 24, 2009, 10:17:05 AM »
I dont really listen to all that much new, I like older music if its good, good music reguardless of type is pleasant/enjoyable.
I now listen to some the new music but it doesent seem to have the personal richness it ought to have?
Am I Talking wierd?
I have found there are old tunes some from hymnals that are nice, the Baha'i music isant all that bad either
I've plaid in Trio's and quartet  some the older German stuff "Bock for example was a wizzard with a musical note" , some African Tunes (South African) have merit, thers so much still to sample yet and so little time to settle on any one particular type, the French CanCan, Chinese Garden Song,Irish Girl, American Red River Valley, Remember that old Coke A Cola song a version of I waould like to teach the world to sing? American Pig Ankle Rag, Aussie Waltzing Matilda, Beatles Yellow Submarine, some that seem bland when you hear it in a movie or on the radio but when you play it it somehow comes off as cool to me.

I as a kid remember listening to Herb Alpert and the Teajuana Brass,  old Vinyl pressings of JohnyCash His prison recordings The boy named sue, The Statler Brothers, late 50's sock hop music (music of my parents)
The music I listened to when in Highschool is familure and somewhat comforting due to memories involved (Car's and ZZ Top,Aerosmith,38 Special,Beasty Boy's) but they dont really hold my interest today like the old stuff.
I caught my 13 year old daughter humming one my music group tunes "Holy,Holy,Holy"................did I infect her? who's to say for certain.

Favorite years for music were mid 60's rock.New bands were popping up all the time, and at that time .they were able to get radio play.
Favorite band was always The Byrds. No one could or still can play a 12 string like Roger Mcguinn. They were most times, one step ahead of the pack.
Folk Rock, country Rock ,--the list goes on.
First rock band to play the Grand Ole Opry--where Ralph Emery and others treated them less than kindly. They paved the way for The Eagles,Tom Petty and many others.
Been a while since I have seen Mcguinn in concert, and I hope to rectify that this fall.

I like the guitar masters, Stevie Ray Vaughn, dime bag,Clapton,ZZ top John Lee Hooker,Junior Brown,et al. Also like much metal and real country Like Hank Thompson,John Anderson, Buck Owens and the like. Some of the new country is ok,but not much. Also a big fan of Gary Stewart, the master of Honky tonk

I grew up trying to emulate Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. Probably play more like Joe Maphis at half speed. My dad was death on fast licks. Keep it sweet and clean, he would say. Enjoyed alot of Don Rich's playing, and Dad approved of that. The guitarists that came along after the mid-60's I don't have much experience with, though I played a 12string in a band for a lot of years because of the stuff Roger McGuinn accomplished. Still, I enjoy playing a little "Chet" and I mean a little....

Mcguinn was wise when he hired his lead guitarist for the latter day Byrds.Clarence White was one of the most gifted musicians ever.In the last top guitar poll--he ranked #50 all time. Not bad for a man in the background.
The only bad part about this,Mcguinn played a lot less of his Ric.

Anything with a good groove, not so hip on the power punk or even traditional punk it gets boring after the 3rd song. Tool, sevindust, static-x, mushroomhead, prong are a few of my favorites. Jonny Cash's cover of rusty cage by soundgarden is probly one of my all time favorite songs

A couple of weeks ago we were fortunate enough to see  "Jersy Boys" at the Orpheum here in Memphis.  It was an incredible show, great music and a great story.
