500 S&W Crimp or No Crimp Question
« on: February 13, 2010, 10:09:40 AM »
Just curious if anyone has taken time to compare crimp or no crimp with the 500? I am shooting Encore with 26" MGM heavy barrel and it has been a pleasant surprise on accuracy so far. I am not crimping right now and wonder if crimping will improve accuracy? Shooting Hornady 300FTX, 350 XTP. Always chasing the holy grail so comments are appreciated.

Muddy,

It is my understanding (I am no expert) that crimping in a single shot rifle will provide no benefit.  You need a good crimp in a tube feed mag so the OAL of the cartridges doesn't change with recoil.  I think revolvers have some of the same issue with recoil.

I have crimped and not crimped in my encore and handi rifles and have not seen much difference.  You may if you load reduced power loads, I have not.

Depends on what powder you are using.  296/H110 requires a firm crimp for best performance.

Well, you could always do like I did,,take your accurate round and try crimping it. If it's more accurate, you have an answer..
Then try different loads with crimping and some without, your gun may like crimping or not.
Sorry I'm not tryin to be a smarty pants, but the best way for you and your technique is to experiment. There are different levels of crimp,,a light touch all the way to a full roll, so,,it's tough to answer how you will crimp. ;D

+1 or try for a light contact with the rifling and see how it goes.

Personally I only crimp when using levers or revolvers. Like what has been suggested - try it both ways. I generally do not crimp so I extend the case life as much as possible when ever I can and I have not found a difference even when using W 296; but I have not done a lot of testing. I have always gotten good accuracy with out crimping in my single shot guns, so I never worked much with crimping. Good Luck and Good Shooting
