1851 and 1860 Frame Holster

Since you all gave me so much help comparing the 1851 Colt and the 1860 Colt frames.  I thought I ought to show you the holster I came up with.  The revolver in the holster is the 1860.  I'm giving the holster to my friend George.  He has the 1851.  I hope he can make it fit.  Anyway I would like to thank you all for your help.

Nice job!
I do have a question though, is the stitching around the top for looks, or is it to secure a liner?
If so what type/weight of leather did you use?

George received the holster today.  The 1851 dropped right in.  And yes, he was very surprised.

Fotto.. Yep the stitches were needed. The outside leather is 7-8 oz Veggie tanned tooling leather.  The lining is 4-5 oz veggie tanned tooling leather.  The holster and the skirt is fully lined.  It's hand sewn using the two needle double/saddle stitch.  Artifical sinew is the thread.  It was dyed with Mazola corn oil and good ol' East Texas sunshine. :)

Thank you AtlLaw.  Yes I plan on doing more.  I'm really hooked on holsters.  I just wish I had gotten into leather working at a much younger age.

I tried making some holsters back in the 70's had to hand stich um, they sure didn't look that good, you do good work.  Just wanted to tell you that, and to let you know I live on pineywood trail out here in Georgia, don't know if they could get a good piece of leather this fur back in the woods.

Hi Trainsteeter,  Thank you for your comments.  If you are interested, Tandy Leather Factory has a store in Tucker, GA.  I think thats near Atlanta.  If you watch their sales you can get some pretty good prices on leather. 

I don't know what it is about these Pineywoods.  My wife and I have lived in several different places in the U.S. and have seen a lot more of it.  Somehow we always wind up back here in the Pineywoods of East Texas. :)

It is, but it's also a fer piece from where I live.  Metro Atlanta covers a lot of territory!   :D.  There was one store in Marietta, but it just closed.  I might run over to Tucker and check that one out.  I do have ideas for a couple of projects!   ;D

One thing I like about the piney woods here in georgia is being able to step out on my porch and blast away.  my closest neighbor is my best friend and we share 60 acres mostly his. 

For us it is like the last frontier, timber companys own much land around us but they don't share very well.  I may try some leather work again now that I have been inspired by your fine work.
