I looked through the faq and did not see what I wanted to know. Maybe I have missed it. I have seen recievers on the forum for sale. What else is need to complete the gun? Can I just purchase the barrel and a stock set? Or is it more involved than this? I undrstand that the barrel may need to be fitted to the reciever. Also what is the better reciever, or is there a reciever to avoid? I'm happy to read if someone can direct me to a post.

Yeah pretty much like you said.

Just remember there are different frames:

SB1=shotgun
SB2=Rifle
SS1=Rimfire

Why do you want to build instead of buying a complete gun?

And, FWIW, the SB-1 Shotgun comes in two sizes.

There's only one SB1 shotgun frame, I think you're referring to the SB2 shotgun frame which isn't the same as an SB2 rifle frame, the SB2 shotgun frame is for 10ga shogun and 12ga Slug Hunter barrels that have a larger chamber swell.

You'll need a stock bolt and the forend screw(local hardware store, sizes listed in the FAQs), they don't necessarily come with them when buying used and aren't included from H&R. Late model SB2 rifle frames made 2000 and later are the best choice, they can be factory fitted with any accessory barrel except rimfire and 10ga based barrels, see the build year code list in the FAQs.

the other thing to be aware of is that older rifles arent always an SB2. you have to check for build year. I got caught on that one. You will probably do better on a complete rifle tho. DR

Thanks guys. I'll spend some quality time with the stickies tonight. And back to MrLoring: Just thought with the plentiful parts in the classifieds, I could put it together a little at a time and learn something too. I hear alot about the handi, but have never held one myself. I've only ever seen one at the local gun shop.

Mixing and matching parts is fun. I have built several this way. If you stick with a newer SB 2 frame the rest is easy. The hard part is having enuff patience.

It doesn't matter if you start with a complete rifle or parts, you will end up with a safe full anyways.

I started with a 243, then a 357 Survivor, then a 17M2, then a 410 barrel for the 357, and now a 45/70 on layaway. If I wasn't so broke I would have bought the 223 they had and ordered a 30/30 and have a 338 Federal done.

Never figured on doing a thing to my Handi, brought it home, loaded rounds, shoot the poogies out of it.

It will out shoot my levers, and mid range gas guns with ease.

the reason you see so many parts for sale is if you buy one at a good price you can part it out for more than you paid. if I see a barrel I want sometimes its easier to buy a whole rifle and sell off the extras. DR

less money, after you figure shipping. I think buying a complete gun to start with would be better then yon can add barrels stocks or what ever.

I just put a NEW syn. stocked 45/70 on layaway. Price out the door $258.34. Only $18.34 more than the SWAG you came up with and it still has that new gun smell.

We piece them together because we can, we enjoy doing it, and it's FUN!!! If you could only buy them as a complete unit and could not change things around they would not be half as much fun, addictive, and enjoyable as they are. Every so often I look around and I have enough spare parts to put another together. Part of the fun is in the searching for parts. Right now I am waiting and hoping for a .22 LR Sportster barrel to become available, but if a .17 Mach2 comes up for a decent price, or even another .22 Mag, I will snap it up. These fine little guns are like Erector Sets or Legos for gun nuts. AR's are as well, but these H&R's/NEF's are a lot more affordable...<><....

I build one sometime back for $160.00. Barrel $80.00 Ultra 24 " bull
Ultra Frame $80.00 FTF in Oklahoma Barrel came from Montana.
Man in Tenn Gave me Forarm Traded Butt stock With man in Texas.
Then put scope on it. Marv.

I don't even want to add up what the BC Carbine .357 Max is costing me......gives me the shakes and shivers to think about it. I've now got the walnut stock set, a SB2 frame is on the way. The Red Dot is here, the buttstock cartridge holder is on it. The barrel has been reamed to Maxi and will be cut and crowned to 16.5 inches tomorrow. Add shipping all over and FFLs for that, and it comes to a lump......but.....when yer sick, yer sick

The next is the .45LC BC Carbine to .460S&W.

Youze guys got any more ideas??

Yeah, stop counting, or amortize it out over one year and it wont seem so bad. But really, just stop counting.....it dont mean a thing.
