Scopes,Scopes,Scopes
« on: February 10, 2010, 03:58:40 AM »
I have a new 223 NEF bull-barrel coming in soon.  Need to make a decision about a scope for it.  Will be using it for coyotes, probably inside 200 yards and a little paper punching.
Options at this time:
Leupold 3-9 x40 Rifleman QDManager
Leupold 2-7x33 VX-1
Leupold 3-9x40 VX-1
Nikon 3-9x40 team Primos w/BDC
Burris 3-9x32 Timberline w/ballistic reticle

I would like to stay under or close to $200.

So, what do you all think?

One other question; what about refurbished, or blemished units for someone like Natchez?

Thanks a lot.

Nikon, Bushnell, and Leupold don't care where you bought it or if you are the original owner. Bushnell makes you pay return shipping which sucks when your $25 scope breaks (90 percent....lol). ATK, which includes Weaver, does want proof of purchase and won't warranty old Weavers. I like Nikons.

I have the Bushnell 3200 3-9x40 and I like it. Guns and Shooting Online (Chuck Hawks et al) rate it at 3+ stars, which is higher than the Leupold Rifleman or VX1 series:

Overstock has it on sale for $168:

One word......LEUPOLD!!  Buy the best one you can afford. As Zoner recommended a used one make your dollars go further!!

The 2x7s are my all time favorite scope!! Plenty of magnafication with a small trim package! I have more than a few of them to show for it!!

I've just ordered a Leupold/Redfield 2-7 x 33.

Looks good on paper, better spec than a VX-1 and cheeper, same production line, same lifetime warranty.

Will report once I've fitted it and fired it.

BTW, It's actually a 2.5-6.5 x 33, same as the other 2-7x33 Leupolds.

NICE!!

I look forward to how you feel about this model!!

I have a old Redfield fixed 3X that has a broken obj lense. When I got a quote on fixing it, it went in the trash!!  I know about Leupold acquisition of Redfield and am strongly considering this as a replacement to try out!!

If your in the Mid-west check out Scheels,
http://www.scheelssports.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ScheelsLocationsView?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001

Their "store-brand" have a lifetime over-the-counter exchange/replacement. Rumor is they are Nikon made but with a lower rear objective housing much the size of Leupold, I have 2 and they are about 50> cheaper than Nikon or Leupold, very happy with them.

I have a wallyworld "Centerpoint" on my .223, reviews here by a few members were good so, what-da-heck, I figgered for $70 for a 4x16x50 I'd try one,,
so far so good, clear optics even at 16x, it's got all the features, easy and accurate adjustment, and it has repeteability.
I handle it gently though, and really wouldn't trust it yet for a serious hunt without a back-up,,only a 2 year warrenty so they have yet to prove the
"time tested" service of quality optics.

LOL.... I bet you already know that Leupold is offering CASH for old broken Redfields when you purchase a new one.

Duh!

$40 is pretty good when you consider the MSRP on the 2-7x33 is only $130 anyway.... and you can get them cheaper than that anyway.

Another vote for the Mueller APV. I have one on my 223 Bull Barrel. Works great for paper punching
and general blasting out to 200 yards. Not bad for $115 shipped. :)

For the money you want to spend I like the following:

  1. Nikon Buckmasters - 3-9x40 or 3-9x50 - great field of view
  2. Bushnell Elite 3200 - either 2-7x32 or the 3-9x40 - solid scope very clear optics
  - You can pick up a Bausch and Lomb 3000 (made before the Bushnell Elite 3200) series at very good prices - these are great scopes for the money

I use to have several Leupold scopes - VX-I, VX-II, VX-3 - Leupold sat on there reputation for a quality product and stopped product innovation and other manufactures came out with better products at lower price points and now Leupold is trying to gain market share back with their VX-1 and Redfield lines - they have faithful followers because of their warranty.  They make a good product but you can find better values in scopes ranging in the $150 to $250 range.  Just for grins check out the focus ring technology on all the scopes discussed.  I have seen a fair share of scopes - started out with the cheapies (< $100) and worked my way up to the better optics (>$1500).  I mainly hunt deer and shoot paper and currently have the following optics that are in use:

Nikon Prostaff - 2
Nikon Buckmasters - 12
Nikon Monarch - 3
Nikon Monarch Gold - 2
Bushnell Elite 3000 - 2
Bushnell Elite 3200 - 6
Bushnell Elite 4000 - 3
Bushnell Elite 4200 - 4
Leupold - 3
Burris Signature- 3
Burris Euro Diamond - 2
Sightron - 1
Center Point - 1
Redfield (Japan) - 1

I had bought a Nikon Buckmasters 3-9x50 off of EBay a few years ago and when I got it there was a huge scratch on the front bell of the scope so I put some black marker on it and put it in the safe.  I needed a scope for a new rifle this year and wanted to use the Nikon but wanted it checked out so I went to the website got the address and shipped the scope along with a letter explaining the history of the scope and wanted them to check it out.  Three days later I received a notification via email that they had received my scope, two days after that I received a letter from Nikon stating they had received my scope and would contact me with their findings.  One week later a brand new unopened scope is returned to me with a letter stating they could not find anything wrong with the scope except the scratch on the front bell so they exchanged the scope and sent me a $10 gift card that can be used on any future Nikon optic.

I have used Leupold and Burris warranty service and they both repaired the scopes with no questions asked - I bought them used.   I have never used the Bushnell warranty so I cannot comment on it.  I guess by not using the warranty says something about there scopes.

Out of the 50 or so scopes I currently own, 90 percent of them were purchased used and I have had great success with them.  Be careful of the reman market - most of those scopes do not carry the same warranty as the product that is new - most are only 90 days.  Whatever brand you decide on get the most you can afford, don't get caught up in the type of reticle - BDC, MilDot, fancy 4 click hold over... - if you can't see it you can't hit it.  Since you are going to be hunting at night my choice is the Nikon 3-9x50 - http://www.nikonhunting.com/riflescopes-buckmasters-buckmasters-3-9x50.html - I like a 50mm on my handi - looks better because the scope is mounted high and love how it picks up with a little light.  This scope does not have fully coated optics so you will get a touch of whiteout early or late if the sun is just right but does not hamper your shot.  Any scope in that price range is going to do that and some so bad you will not be able to see through it.

Show us some pictures when you get it all set up.

Mark

I have one of these on my 223 barrel and it has never lost zero, is clear, and is quite bright. I think Midway sells them for around 125 bones.

Out of those, I would go with the Nikon team Primos.  From what I have read, it has the same optics as the Monarch line, which is about the same as a Bushnell 4200.

I prefer the Nikon also, but don't spend extra for the ballistic drop feature.  Up to 300 yds with the .223 on coyotes it isn't necessary at all.  Buy a nice $100 Nikon and spend the rest on ammo and shooting!  I have a Bushness legend 3x9 on mine.  44 Man

Well, I went with the new 2x7x35 Redfield Revolution made by Leupold.  A review by Chuck Hawk made up my mind.  So we will see.  $130 free shipping.  Had my hands on a  VXI for $229 but went with the Redfield. Found some Varget and some 69 gr Sierra MatchKings and some primers.  So, now if I can get a set of Lee Collet dies in here, I will be ready to begin my NEF 223 adventure.  Looking forward to it.  Hoping it will make a nice complement to my 25-06.

Thanks for everyone's input.
