new model Single-Six Hunter
« on: November 28, 2009, 05:27:54 PM »
is it worth my money- getting a super beefy .22lr/mag convertible just to shoot .22lr mainly?

hard to break and .22lr is cheap so it can last a lifetime without eating a fortune in ammo, thrift is a plus because i'm not exactly well off

any owner opinions?

Guess it depends on how it fits YOU.  It's the only 7 1/2" Single Six so see how the balance is for you.  If you're intending on using optics, it's easiest with the Hunter also.  I have one that I Bisley-ized that I love even having never put a round through it yet.  If you don't need the optic mount ease, simply go with a regualr Single Six as they're more affordable.

I was thinking along extremes, go hunter or go slim with the top strap sight notch sass looking single six

but if ww3 breaks out then stainless and beefy are good indeed, then again how am I gonna break a ruger shooting 22lr

Although bulky, mine can shoot Fed. Hi Vel HP ammo w/in 1&1/2" at 50yds with a 4x scope from a rest......am glad I have it; although I'm currently looking for another .22LR for a lighter, more compact, yet equally as accurate trail gun.....am considering a S&W Model 63 (5"barrel, 8shot,SS) or the Ruger MarkIII 22/45 Hunter (4&3/4" fluted barrel)....both are approx 29oz.

I could just get a brick of 22lr and make a zip gun but the cowboy gun fantasy just won't die.... I gotta get a revolver

Aside from the bbl rib on the Hunter model, one is no more "beefy" than the other. Not gonna blow on up.    :D

The fixed sight Single Sixes are neat but much less common.  Some variants only got a very small run made of them.  If you're looking at that section of the shelf though, don't discount the little Bearcat either.  Not a WWIII hopeful bu then again, if that were the caseor concern, I'd be looking at something besides a Single Six anyways.  ;)

yeah.... that's another question, the bearcat looks much more ergonomic (and has a low bore) so other than not being "beefy" is it infact better for it's intended purpose

ps- I just can't get the hang of ramp sights so that's a serious consideration too

now that I know you work for ruger I oughta just harass you until you have a stroke or I have an epiphany and actually make up my mind  :D

If youse gots yer health an' a good ol' lady yer damn "well off".  Looks like yer gud on bot countz.  So sayeth an old person.

Having said that, let me add that I have a normal stainless single six with real sights, and I am completely happy with it.  It's accurate enough for farm country rabbits and squirrels and can shooting.  If you want a target gun get a Mark II or a Buckmark.

An' I gotz a gud ol' lady,to.  An most a my healt.

my g/f aka honeybear, plus duke-dog are fine... but I'm a hermit and need my toys to avoid a sedentary lifestyle... so in a roundabout way a new 22lr will keep me from getting atherosclerosis, diabetes, or just patherically soft before I'm thirty

If you like the single six then get one.  they are great little guns.  I have a Bisley and wanted it to get a 22 mag cylinder for it but the Bisley is 22LR ONLY according to Ruger.
I forget why I wanted the 22 mag cylinder, other than My uncle had a single six and the 22 LR was good and would blow up soda cans but the 22 mag would turn them inside out.
I would get it and if you never use it OK if not it is just there.
For a long time I filled mine with the Aguilla Colibre rounds and would shoot Mice in the garage with it.  They were quiet and was able to get some back yard plinking in with out driving the neighbors nuts.
Also used CB's in it to cull rabbits from the garden and clean rats out of the chicken coop.
We used snake shot to shoot moths under the flood light.
I have a few Auto's but they do not load the smaller rounds like the revolver.
I guess if I had Coyotes in the chicken coop I would want the 22Mag.
Good luck.

the convertible option is cool but I don't know that I'd actually use it much

I'll get back on the site and check the bearcats out more... they do look cool too (just not that beef-haus-titan ruger look)

The bear cats are cool but small.  About 2/3 to 3/4 the size of the single six.
I have shot one a few times and would be a great plinker but my option would be for the larger single six with adjustable sights and a 5- 6.5" barrel.

A good argument could be made that the Ruger S/A .22's are the strongest, most reliable made.  22 S/A's by Freedom Arms and USFA might be a little more accurate, and better finished.  Also 4 or 5 times the price...

I have several Single Six's and a Bearcat.  For any kind or serious use, get the Adj. sight version.  My fixed sight Beracat hits point of aim, but thats rare, and nothing is more fustrating then a gun thats off, especially if you want to hunt small game.

I have the extra .22 mag. Cyl with one of mine, but seldom use it.  Ammo is more expensive, big increase in muzzle blast, for a rather small gain in performance, not to mention a little less accurate, at least in my gun.  Still, it can't hurt to have it,,

Barrel length is a personal choice.  For just carrying, random plinking and small game hunting, I like a 4 3/4 - 5 1/2 inch barrel (carries well on the hip)  For serious small game hunting, where accuracy and "hit ability" is important, then the Hunter model, with its easy scope mounting, would be my chioce.  It's amazing what a good .22 revolver can do with a 2 to 4 power scope mounted.

Larry if you've got several then they must be working for you.... heck I should get both and be done with it.. I look at the pictures in my paper catlog and can't decide (think i need to go to a gun shop and feel some up a bit to help me make the decision)

I think more then any other gun, a handgun is a personal choice, a matter of what you really like, what feels good in your hand.  The best way to choose is to check em out in person.  The most practical choice is not always the best choice..  Most people consider the Bearcat to be an in-accurate plinker.  I carry mine all the time when I am in the woods scouting, or using my camera.  It often accounts for small game.

that does help some... good picture

if I get the hunter then I don't need a rifle to hunt squirrel (not that I can't use a bearcat but they gotta be real close with no scope) and if I get the bearcat then I have a neat little gun that's just right for packing but not for long shots.. (why can't snub .38's be legal for squirrel- it would solve the little gun problem)

man I just looked through the paper and online magazines.. they both look so good.  as for weaponsize I have have small and effeminate hands.  my g/f is (supposedly) 5'3" and my hands are barely bigger than hers, by barely I mean my fingertips are maybe half an inch longer and my fingers are webbed togethere a bit more.. so think little woman or child hands.  that might actually make the bearcat fit me better (no I don't use gloves when shooting unless it's at the range so that never comes up)

Are you the guy in the burger commercial that wants to go to McD's cuz their burgers are smaller?  ;D

I kinda like the little Bearcat but if ya wanna hit what ya are shooting at they really are a poor choice. If ya just wanna make noise and burn powder they do OK.

I got a couple of the Single-Sixes in Stainless and both have the mag cylinder.  One is more accurate with the mags and the other, I really can't tell the difference.  The mags in the pistol barrel will get ya pretty close to LR rifle speed if ya need a little extra power.  You can pick up a Mark I, II, or III in the auto later.  DP

Hi Squib
I am thinking about buying the Ruger model NR6L single six with 6 1/2" barrel and two cylinders .22 RF and .22 WMR  adjustable sights and checkered hard rubber grips.
It is very easy to make the trigger a two pound pull and they shoot well. I have a Browning Buckmark but want a .22 revolver. I shoot a Super Blackawk in .44 magnum and am very used to it and like it very well. The .44 mag has a two pound trigger and is perfect as far as I'm concerned.

I've had this one for well over 20 years.  OK, a 5-1/2" might be a little more "handy", but it's been a real good gun.
I couldn't count the number of Rockchucks it's terminated......
