How about seeing some good shooting!
« on: November 06, 2003, 05:28:38 PM »
By the time I started shooting Silhouette, David Tubb had left the sport, so I never seen him shoot.  About my second Az State match, Tony Tello was on my left and Lee O'Neil was on my right, that was someting to see, Tony is always in the thick of it, and Lee was just about at the top of his game, he ran 10 pigs, and for the long run, I think he had 25 or 30, and this was in Yuma, where it's fairly windy.  The first California St. match that I was at Jeff Boyer and Jim Feren shot a 35 apiece, but that was for second and third, because Mr. Dadian shot a 37.  At a monthy match in Tucson a year or so ago, Jeff Boyer and I started on Turkeys, he shot 4 and ended up with a 33/40 at the end of the match, that was fun to watch. I was in Ridgway this year when Sanchez shot that 39.

There is a guy at my club that I don't think you will ever hear much about because he just dosen't get out to too many matches.  I'll drop his name cause he deserves the recognition.  It is Dan Golden.

We shoot NRA Small Bore and Hunter Pistol and NRA Cowboy rifle in small bore and Pistol Cartridge.  Dan's first time out with the Pistol Cartridge Cowboy Rifle he shot a 38/40 to qualify for Master at his first sanctioned match.

At our Idaho State Match in Nampa Idaho, Dan shot a 52/60 in the Small Bore Cowboy Rifle.  We found out later that he had broken the National Record by 1 so he had the National Record at that time and may still have, I have not heard if it has been broken since.

He got his Grand Slam in the Pistol Cartridge Cowboy Rifle the first season he shot that game and his serial number on the pin was # 5.

Every time he shows up to a match everyone else plans on getting a 2ed place cause Dan will get the Match winner.

Anyway, I thought this would be a good place to introduce Dan cause I doubt he will shot up at the Nationals anytime soon.  He is just too busy for that.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

Sounds like Mr. Golden is a heckuva shot. Some guy's are unconscious, they can pick up a 2 x 4 and shoot it well.  Bill Zewe shot a 55 x 60 inLong Range Cowboy at the 2002 Pa. States with a .38-55 and barely had sight settings, I'm not sure that it may not have been the first time he shot it in a match. Needless to say he stomped the snot out of the rest of us.  Unless, they were broken already which wouldn't surprise me. The curent national records for Cowboy are 54 x 60 in S.B, 52 x 60 in P.C. and 56 x 60 in Long Range set at the McKean County Rifle Range, Bradford, Pa. at the 2003 Pa. States the end of August. Any updates would be most appreciated.

Cowboy Small Bore

You have me intrigued.  We recently started shooting cowboy small bore silhouette at our range.  Primarily we shoot IHMSA silhouette rules so our course of fire is 3/8 scale small bore targets at 25,50,75,100 yds.  Are you talking NRA rules where the chickens are 1/2 scale at 40 yards and the rest of the targets are 3/8 scale at 50,75, & 100 yards?

Yes, I am referring to NRA Cowboy Lever Action 40, 50, 75 and 100 meters on 1/2 scale targets, or 50, 100, 150 and 200 meters on full size targets.  Keep in mind although Long Run Records can be set at approved matches (e.g. monthly matches).  Match records are only recognized at Registered matches ( primarily State, Regional or National championships).

1/2 scale for small bore??

You mean to tell me that the cowboy small bore events use 1/2 scale targets?  I thought that I read somewhere that they are 3/8 with the exception of the chickens.

Well then it appears that I need to get involved with this event.  Your chickens set farther would be more than offset by the smaller turkies & rams that I was shooting.  Anybody out there know of NRA matches near Kansas City?  I've read about NRA shoots in Topeka KS...anywhere else?
