shrouded hammers
« on: May 16, 2010, 03:20:39 PM »
I am thinking about buying a Smith 638 for my wife, as she has fired one and liked it. Some where and I can't remember where I read that the design of the shrouded hammer could give problems. Any help would be apperciated.
Thanks

Clum:  don't know what you read or who wrote it but it was probably written by the kind of person who would most likely shoot themselves in the foot with anything they tried drawing from a pocket.

I've had a M38 for a bunch of years - it is my pocket go-to.  It does not snag, it does not hang-up or drag in the pocket.  It goes 'bang' every time I pull the trigger, it is accurate enough to hit a 12" hanging plate at 100m and it carries very, very well.  Greybeard likes his too.

I think I recall reading some gunwriter who was hyping the da only snubbies that he rpeferred the da only to the shrouded hammer because it might.......yet he never owned or carried one.  Consider the source.

I've carried a S&W M48 for about 37 years.  I carried a M36 for a couple of years before that and greatly prefer the shrouded hammer.

I carried a M-38 airweight for a while then switched to a 340 PD with an enclosed trigger . I work construction and my pockets get dirt in them . I have had the M-38 full of dirt around the hammer area and it would still shoot , a bit gritty trigger pull though . That said a covered trigger would be better if she was going to carry it say in her pocket or purse where things may find there way into the hammer area . I still carry the M-38 from time to time and like it . Is the one you are looking at SS or aieweight ? I have had both , if the SS gun it is a tad larget than the AIRWEIGHT and holsters and such are different . Easy way to tell SS gun is 357mag
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

If she can cock the hammer on a 638, go with it. I carry a 638 and it's a little on the hard side for me. Wife can't cock it at all, she has a 637.
Both have crimson trace grips and very accurate. Both are great shooters. Like my 686 better, but it ain't no carry gun.
