Commander slide on gov't frame...what does it take?
« on: February 03, 2010, 02:19:22 AM »
Limited information discovered by searching here and other places.  So...what does it take to get a commander length slide on a gov't frame.  I would imagine some dust cover and slight recoil spring clearance issues could be rather easily remedied.

Thanks - all responses appreciated.

The dust cover needs to be shortened, the Commander recoil spring plug is shorter, as is the barrel bushing and recoil spring guide.  The ejector is also different. The face in the recoil spring trough behind the dust cover that the spring guide rests against is further back in the Commander frame, to give more room for the compressed recoil spring.  This would have to be machined back to the Commander's frame position.

If you have both a Commander and a full sized frame to compare, you can see what has to be done.

If you have a complete (spring, guide etc) Commander upper in the same caliber it will "work" as is.  The dust cover will be too long and would be a cosmetic issue.  If I remember correctly, difference in barrel length between a Government Model and a Commander is .75-inch
