.308 with 220's
« on: February 16, 2010, 10:02:25 AM »
Plan on picking up a 15 inch barrel in .308 for my Encore. Bullet of choice at this stage will be a Hornady Interlock 220. Is the standard rate of twist in the factory barrel fast enough to stabilize the 220's?

Probably but why such a heavy bullet? To what end do you feel the need for a 220 grain?

Maybe the same reason Winchester cataloged the 30-03 for 25 years after the military abandoned it in favor of the 30-06. Penetration on big game. Sort of a 308-03. :-\

Because I plan on using it for Alaskan moose and brown bear. Most people who have used a 220 comment they can penetrate as far as a 300 grain slug out of a 375 H&H.

Has anyone here actually shot a 220 out of one of the factory .308 barrels?

Did some searching for ya and from what I read the 1-10 twist will stabilize the 220's in 308 in a 15" barrel. I would say buy some and try them out just to make sure. Good luck

If I were to go after Alaska moose or brown bear with a handgun it WOULD be a 375JDJ or else..........no offense intended to your thinkin'.  My thought would be that the 220gr wouldn't get enough velocity out of the 15" tube to generate as much energy as say a 180 Nosler Partition out of the same barrel.  Without running both over a chrono I'm not sure how you'd find out the true story.

220's... good choice, keep buying those big "rounds" so they keep making them. As far as accuracy you should be fine, your a handloader, and there should be a powder combo that will make it shoot for you. 180's maybe a little faster, but, you Are Not going to impress a brown bear with the difference in energy!! 220's man... 220's  8)

History has taught us the ideal velocities for penetration in 1900-2200 fps. Am betting I can reach 2,000 fps at the muzzle and every moose and griz I ever shot has been taken under 100 yards except for one. Not concerned in the energy factors at all. I live by the rules of heavy bullets breaking down bones and organs. It has served me very well over the years on animals weighing over 1,000 pounds.
Thanks.

You are only going to get 2500 FPS from a 24 -26" RIFLE barrel, And that is with very slow powders. A 150 grain FMJ will penetrate thru a bull moose at 50 yards. You seem to have made your decision BEFORE posting the ??. A 180 grain bullet cast from Linotype will penetrate also.

220 RN and healthy dose of H414 will give you energy and accuracy.  Take a few Ibuprofen before you shoot it though so you don't feel it.

Since you don't already have the barrel, I would suggest getting a .30 cal. barrel that has a little more H.P. maybe a 30/06 or 300 Win Mag., pleanty of H.P. to push those 220's.  220's are a heavy for cal. bullet and you would do your self justice picking a larger .30 case to push them out of.  JMHO

Call Hornady, I'll think you'll be happy when they tell you that they expand down below 1600fps, thats quite a distance away from you, even if you load to "only" 2000fps.

I suggest 200 to 225 grain bullets out of a 338-06 JDJ from SSKIndustries.com  Also get their T’SOB 6 screw base and 3 rings and a good quality scope, probably Leupold and don’t look back.

Fire form brass from 30-06 Springfield.  Hornady also makes 250 grain round nose, if you desire more weight.
